A cam stuck advanced hurts driveability and emissions and can cause rough idle or stalling, but it does not usually cause immediate mechanical damage. The rationale changes if the underlying cause is low oil pressure or sludge, because that threatens the whole engine and would be a high-severity finding.

"A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
The computer told the bank 1 intake camshaft to sit at one position and measured it sitting more advanced than that, or the camshaft would not move when asked. Most often this is an oil flow or oil control valve problem in the variable valve timing system, though a wiring fault, a failed phaser or a worn timing chain can set the same code. It is not evidence of a broken camshaft.
Variable valve timing rotates the intake cam relative to the crank using an oil-pressure-driven phaser, metered by an oil control valve the ECM pulse-width modulates. The ECM derives actual cam angle from the cam position sensor referenced to the crank signal. If actual advance exceeds commanded advance by more than a calibrated number of crank degrees for a calibrated time, or the phaser fails to track a commanded sweep, P0011 sets. The system runs on engine oil, so oil condition, level and pressure are part of the circuit.
How the car detected itDuring normal operation, and on some calibrations during a deliberate self-test sweep, the ECM compares desired cam angle to actual cam angle computed from the timing between cam and crank sensor edges. A sustained error in the advanced direction, or no response to a commanded change, sets the code. The monitor generally only runs with the engine warm and oil pressure established, which is why the code often appears after several minutes of driving rather than at startup.
A trouble code records what a control module measured. It does not identify which part failed. Test before replacing anything.

- The most common outcome is continued poor mid-range power, unstable idle and higher fuel consumption, plus a failed emissions test. The real risk is the ignored root cause. If the phaser is being starved by sludge or a worn oil pump, the same starvation is reaching the chain tensioner and bearings, and the next code is typically P0016 or a rod knock.

Many vehicles show no symptom at all beyond the warning light. The absence of a symptom does not mean the fault is not real.

Ordering reflects how often each cause is responsible in general, not a probability for your vehicle. Confirm by testing.
In order. Each of these is cheaper or faster than what follows it, and each one can make the rest unnecessary.
Engine oil level and condition, and the service history
This system is hydraulic. Low, overdue, sludged or wrong-viscosity oil is a common and inexpensive reason a phaser misbehaves, and it must be ruled out before any part is bought because it costs less than anything you could buy.
Whether the specified oil viscosity was actually used at the last service
VVT passages and control valve orifices are sized for a specific viscosity. A heavier oil than specified slows or blocks phaser response, especially when cold.
Any other stored codes, particularly cam or crank sensor and oil pressure codes
A correlation or sensor code alongside P0011 shifts the diagnosis away from the control valve and toward timing components or a signal fault.
Whether the code appeared right after an oil change, timing job or engine work
A recent service is a strong lead: wrong filter, wrong oil, a disturbed connector, or timing reassembled a tooth off.
The oil control valve connector and harness
A chafed wire or corroded connector is a five-minute inspection and produces the same symptom as a failed valve at a fraction of the cost.
Confirm the oil is correct and clean, then re-evaluate

Change the oil and filter with the exact viscosity the manufacturer specifies if there is any doubt about age, level or grade. Clear the code and drive a full warm-up cycle. A meaningful share of P0011 complaints end here.

Command the cam phaser with a bidirectional scan tool and watch it respond

With the engine warm and idling, sweep the commanded cam angle and graph desired against actual. This is the single most informative test on the code, because it separates a controller and valve problem from a mechanical phaser problem.
ExpectedActual cam angle should follow commanded within a few crank degrees, smoothly and without lag. No movement, or movement that overshoots and will not return to zero, is a real fault.
Electrically test the oil control valve before removing anything

Measure the solenoid winding resistance at the valve's own pins with the harness unplugged, and compare it to the value in service data for that engine. Then, on the harness side, confirm the ECM is actually driving the valve by checking the control signal while a cam angle change is commanded. Both measurements are made with the valve still bolted in place, so the disassembly labor is only worth spending once an electrical fault has been ruled out. Resistance specifications vary by manufacturer, so do not use a generic number.
ExpectedWinding resistance in line with the figure published for that engine, and a switching drive signal present at the harness connector while the ECM commands a change. An open or shorted winding, or no command at all, identifies the fault before a single fastener comes out.
Remove and inspect the oil control valve and its filter screen

Pull the valve out and look at the screen behind or around it. Carbon and varnish plugging that screen is extremely common. Check that the spool slides freely through its full travel by hand and returns under spring force.

Bench test the valve if it is off the engine

Pulse battery voltage and ground to the solenoid in short bursts of a second or two - these valves are duty-cycle driven and can overheat if held energized at full battery voltage, which will destroy a good part during the test meant to evaluate it - and confirm the spool actuates with a firm click and fully returns when power is removed. A valve that sticks in the advanced position holds the phaser advanced regardless of what the ECM commands.
ExpectedPositive, repeatable movement in both directions, with the spool returning fully under spring force each time power is removed.
Measure actual engine oil pressure

Fit a mechanical gauge at the sender port and read pressure at idle and at raised rpm, warm. Compare to the manufacturer's specification, which varies widely. Low pressure explains a phaser that cannot hold position and points at the oil pump, worn bearings or a stuck relief valve.
ExpectedPressure meeting the manufacturer's specification at both the idle and the raised-rpm test points. There is no figure that applies across engines, so use service data. A reading below specification redirects the diagnosis to the oil supply and makes phaser replacement premature.
Inspect the phaser and timing components last

If oil, valve and pressure are all good and the phaser still will not track its command, the phaser itself is suspect: a failed lock pin or an internal leak past its vanes. On engines where the timing cover comes off for this anyway, inspect chain slack, guides and tensioner at the same time.
ExpectedA phaser that locks at its parked position and holds a commanded angle, with chain slack, guides and tensioner within specification. A phaser that will not track its command with oil condition, oil pressure, the control valve and its circuit all verified good is the remaining candidate.

US independent-shop ranges, parts plus labor. The spread here is unusually wide because the cheap end is a 60 dollar oil change and the expensive end is timing cover work. Access drives labor more than parts: on transverse V6 and V8 engines a rear-bank phaser can double the figures above. Diagnosis with a bidirectional scan tool typically adds 100 to 200 dollars and is worth paying for on this code.
- Buying a cam phaser first. The phaser is the expensive end of a hydraulic circuit whose cheap end fails far more often.
- Skipping the oil control valve screen. Cleaning a clogged screen fixes a large share of these without any parts.
- Using a generic solenoid resistance figure from a forum. That value is engine-specific and a wrong reference condemns good parts.
- Holding a VVT solenoid energized at full battery voltage on the bench. These valves are pulse-width driven and can cook their winding, so pulse them in short bursts.
- Treating P0011 and P0016 as the same fault. P0011 is a response and position error; P0016 is a correlation error and more often means the chain or a sensor.
- Clearing the code and road testing before the engine is fully warm. The monitor mostly runs hot, so a short cold drive proves nothing.
- Filling with a thicker oil to quiet a rattle. That makes phaser response worse, not better.
