Stop driving
The PCM only takes this action when the misfire rate is high enough to destroy the catalytic converter. Fuel shutoff protects the converter but leaves you with a cylinder down, sharply reduced power, and possible stalling. The condition that triggered it is still present.

Misfire Detected - Fueling Disabled
The engine was misfiring badly enough that the computer shut off fuel to the affected cylinder to keep raw fuel out of the catalytic converter. This is a protective action, not a fault in itself - the real problem is whatever caused the misfire.
The PCM tracks misfire rate per cylinder against two thresholds: a lower emissions threshold evaluated over a long window of crankshaft revolutions, and a higher catalyst-damage threshold evaluated over a much shorter window. The catalyst-damage limit takes a more severe misfire to trip, but trips far faster when it does. When it is exceeded, the PCM cuts injector pulse to that cylinder so unburned fuel stops reaching the converter, flashes the MIL, and sets P0363 alongside the underlying P030x misfire code. Fuel is normally restored automatically once the misfire rate falls back below threshold.
How the car detected itThe crankshaft position sensor resolves small speed variations between firing events. A cylinder that fails to contribute torque produces a measurable deceleration in the crank signal at its point in the firing order. The PCM counts these events per cylinder and compares the rate against calibrated limits. Cat-damage misfire is judged over a short window, typically a few hundred revolutions, so the response is fast by design.
A trouble code records what a control module measured. It does not identify which part failed. Test before replacing anything.

Repeated fuel cut and restore cycles cause lurching that stresses driveline mounts. If the cause is mechanical - a burned valve or a broken ring land - continued running makes the engine damage worse.

The companion P030x code identifying which cylinder is misfiring
P0363 on its own tells you nothing about the cause. The cylinder-specific code, or a random misfire code, is what actually directs the diagnosis.
Live misfire counters per cylinder
Shows whether the misfire is isolated to one cylinder, moving between cylinders, or affecting several at once. That distinction splits the diagnosis into two completely different paths.
Whether the engine has recently overheated, lost coolant, or run out of fuel
Head gasket damage, a burned valve, and fuel starvation all present as severe misfire and are diagnosed differently from an ignition fault.
Fuel level and fuel quality
Water or heavily contaminated fuel produces exactly this pattern and gets missed because nobody checks it.
Freeze frame conditions
A misfire that only appears cold, only under load, or only at idle narrows the field enormously before any part is touched.

P0363 is a companion code. Look for P0300 through P0312, fuel trim codes, sensor codes, and cam or crank correlation codes. A lean bank code alongside the misfire points at unmetered air or fuel delivery, not ignition.

Watch live misfire counters while the engine runs

Idle the engine and observe which cylinder accumulates counts, and whether the pattern moves. One cylinder counting means a cylinder-specific fault. Several counting means a shared cause such as fuel pressure, cam timing, an intake leak, or a failed MAF.
ExpectedA clear pattern of counts concentrated on one cylinder, or spread across the engine.
Test spark on the affected cylinder

Swap the coil with a neighboring cylinder and see whether the misfire follows. Inspect the spark plug for gap, fouling, oil, coolant deposits, and physical damage. This is the cheapest branch of the triage, so it goes first.
ExpectedIf the misfire follows the coil, the coil is the failed part - but finish the job: inspect that cylinder's spark plug for gap, fouling, and cracks, and check the plug tube for standing oil. Fitting a new coil into an oil-filled tube or against a worn plug kills the replacement the same way the original died.
Test the injector on the affected cylinder

On port-injection systems, relieve fuel pressure and disconnect the battery before opening any fuel connection, keep an extinguisher to hand, and replace the injector O-rings on reinstallation. With the injector electrically disconnected, measure winding resistance and compare it against the other injectors on the same engine rather than a remembered number. Then swap it with a neighboring injector and see whether the misfire follows. A stethoscope against the injector body tells you whether it is clicking at all, but a clicking injector can still be flow-restricted. On direct-injection engines, do not attempt this as a driveway test: the rail runs at extreme pressure, the injectors need new sealing and support rings and a specified torque on refit, and solenoid resistance means little because the driver uses a boosted voltage waveform. On DI, use scan-tool injector balance or contribution data and leave physical removal to a shop.
ExpectedOn port injection, resistance closely matching the other injectors on the same engine, and the misfire following the injector if it is the failed part. Values vary by injector type, so compare across the set rather than to a remembered number. On direct injection, the answer comes from the injector balance or contribution data, not from an ohm reading.
Check fuel supply if more than one cylinder is affected

Monitor commanded versus actual rail pressure on direct-injection systems - read it from the scan tool, and do not open a high-pressure line to fit a gauge. On port injection, relieve pressure before connecting a gauge at the rail and keep an extinguisher to hand. Low pressure under load with normal idle pressure points at a failing pump or a restricted filter. Long-term fuel trims running well positive support this.
ExpectedRail pressure holding the commanded value under load. Fuel trims beyond plus or minus ten percent are worth investigating. Absolute pressure specifications are vehicle-specific.
Run a compression or cylinder leakdown test on the affected cylinder

If spark and fuel both check out, the cylinder is not sealing. Leakdown is the more informative test because it tells you where the air escapes: intake, exhaust, crankcase, or adjacent cylinder. Compare all cylinders rather than chasing an absolute number.
ExpectedCylinders within roughly ten to fifteen percent of each other. One cylinder markedly low is the answer.
Smoke test the intake and check for unmetered air

Introduce low-pressure smoke into the intake tract and look for escape at the intake boot, PCV hoses, brake booster line, and intake manifold gasket. Relevant mainly when several cylinders misfire or when lean codes are present.
ExpectedNo smoke escaping anywhere downstream of the mass air flow sensor.
Verify cam and crank timing if the misfire is widespread

Check for cam-crank correlation codes and compare cam timing against specification with a scan tool where the data is available. A stretched timing chain or a failed variable valve timing actuator produces multi-cylinder misfire that no amount of coil and plug replacement will fix.

The range is enormous because the underlying causes range from a coil to a cylinder head. Diagnosis is worth paying for here. Expect one to two hours of diagnostic labor before any part is quoted. If spark and fuel both tested good on the affected cylinder and a shop is quoting internal engine work, ask to see the compression or leakdown numbers first - that repair should never be sold without them. If the misfire cleanly followed a swapped coil or injector, no compression test is needed.
- Treating P0363 as a code with its own repair, instead of a flag pointing at the companion misfire code.
- Replacing the catalytic converter because of the exhaust smell, when the converter is the victim rather than the cause.
- Clearing the code and driving on the theory that the light going out means the problem is gone - the PCM restores fuel when the misfire rate drops, so the light going out proves nothing.
- Replacing coils, plugs, and injectors as a set without a swap test to see whether the fault moves.
- Opening a fuel connection without relieving system pressure and disconnecting the battery, or treating a direct-injection rail as if it were a port-injection one.
- Skipping compression testing after ignition and fuel both test good, and continuing to buy parts.
- Overlooking contaminated fuel, which mimics every other cause and costs nothing to check.
