The computer sealed the fuel vapour system, tested it for leaks, and found one leaking at about the rate a 0.020 inch hole would — roughly the diameter of a straight pin. Fuel vapour is escaping to the atmosphere instead of being captured and burned.

The EVAP system captures fuel tank vapour in a charcoal canister and later purges it into the intake. The leak monitor seals the system and either pulls manifold vacuum on it, watches for natural vacuum from cooling fuel, or pressurises it with a dedicated leak detection pump, then measures the decay rate against the rate a calibrated 0.020 inch orifice would produce. P0456 is the tightest of the standard leak thresholds — P0455 is a gross leak and P0442 a medium one — which is why it is the most intermittent and the most weather-sensitive of the three.

How the car detected it

The module closes the vent valve to seal the canister from atmosphere, then either opens the purge valve to draw intake vacuum into the tank or runs a leak detection pump, and finally seals the system and watches the fuel tank pressure sensor. If pressure or vacuum bleeds off faster than the 0.020 inch reference rate, the test fails. The monitor only runs inside a narrow window — fuel level typically between roughly a quarter and three quarters, stable ambient temperature, and steady driving — and usually needs two consecutive failures before the light comes on.

A trouble code records what a control module measured. It does not identify which part failed. Test before replacing anything.

What to check first

In order. Each of these is cheaper or faster than what follows it, and each one can make the rest unnecessary.

  1. The fuel cap and filler neck

    Free and genuinely the most common single cause. Remove it, inspect the rubber seal for hardening, flat spots or cracks, wipe the sealing surface of the filler neck clean, and refit until it clicks. A cap that seals when new can leak at exactly this threshold once the seal ages.

  2. Whether the code appeared right after a fill-up

    A cap left loose or cross-threaded at the pump is the classic trigger. If the timing lines up, tighten it, clear the code, and give the monitor a few days of driving before spending money.

  3. Freeze frame ambient temperature and fuel level

    A leak that only sets in cold weather usually means a rubber seal shrinking. A leak that only sets on a full or nearly empty tank points toward the tank top or the filler area rather than the engine bay.

  4. Accessible EVAP hoses and the canister

    Rodent chew damage and cracked plastic lines near the tank are common and sometimes visible without any equipment. Plastic EVAP line goes brittle with age and cracks where it is clipped or bent.

How a shop diagnoses this
  1. Capture freeze frame, then inspect and test the cap

    Record fuel level and ambient temperature from freeze frame before clearing. Then inspect the cap seal and the filler neck sealing surface. Where a cap tester is available, pressure test the cap itself rather than guessing from appearance.

  2. Smoke test the sealed system

    This is the definitive test and the point at which guessing should stop. Introduce low-pressure smoke at the service port with the vent valve commanded closed. EVAP systems operate at very low pressure — stay within the manufacturer's stated test pressure, well under 1 psi on most systems, or you risk damaging the canister or a tank seal.

  3. Work the smoke test methodically over the whole system

    Check in order: cap and filler neck, filler hose, tank top and fuel pump module seal, tank pressure sensor, vent valve and its filter, canister body and its fittings, all hard lines along the underbody, purge valve and the line into the intake.

  4. Check the purge valve for leak-by

    A purge valve that does not seal fully when unpowered leaks intake vacuum into the EVAP system continuously and can produce this code with no visible external leak. Purge solenoids are normally closed, so with the valve unplugged, vacuum applied to the intake side should hold. Do not confuse it with the vent valve, which is the normally open one. If service data for this vehicle describes an unusual design, confirm the expected unpowered state before judging the result.

  5. Inspect the vent valve and vent filter

    The vent side usually sits low near the rear of the vehicle and collects water, road salt, mud and insect nests. Contamination there can prevent the valve from sealing during the test, which reads as a leak.

  6. Verify tank pressure sensor plausibility

    Compare the fuel tank pressure sensor reading against atmospheric with the cap off and the system open. A sensor with a biased reading can cause the module to misjudge the decay rate and set a leak code with no leak present.

The parts are usually inexpensive; diagnosis and access set the price. Expect to pay for smoke test diagnostic time as a separate line regardless of what is found. Anything at the top of the tank means dropping the tank on many vehicles, which is where a cheap part becomes a several-hundred-dollar job.

Common mistakes with this code
  • Replacing the fuel cap and calling it fixed. Sometimes it is right, but without a smoke test it is a guess, and the code takes days to come back so the guess feels validated for a while.
  • Declaring success because the light did not return within a day. The EVAP monitor is one of the slowest to run and needs specific fuel level and temperature conditions.
  • Over-pressurising during a smoke test. Shop air pressure will damage the charcoal canister and can push a tank seal past its limit, creating a leak that was not there.
  • Missing the fuel pump module seal at the top of the tank. It is a very common 0.020 inch source and is invisible without dropping the tank or lifting an access panel.
  • Overlooking the vent filter and vent valve because they are dirty and awkward to reach — which is exactly why they fail.
