This one can affect how the engine runs, which raises it above a pure emissions fault. Unmetered vapor at idle causes rough idle, hard starts after refueling, and occasional stalling. It is not damaging the engine, but a stall in traffic is a real hazard, so a vehicle that stalls with this code deserves prompt attention.

Evaporative Emission System High Purge Flow
The computer detected fuel vapor flowing into the engine when it had not asked for any. Something is letting the tank draw vacuum through the purge path at the wrong time.
P0496 is a flow fault, not a circuit fault. The PCM commands the purge valve closed and expects the fuel tank pressure to stay near atmospheric. Instead it sees vacuum developing in the tank, meaning intake manifold vacuum is reaching the tank through a purge valve that is not sealing. A purge valve held open mechanically by carbon or debris, one damaged by liquid fuel carryover from a saturated canister, or a control driver stuck grounded all produce this. A vent valve stuck closed produces very similar tank vacuum and must be ruled out separately. Some strategies also watch fuel trim across a commanded purge-off transition. If the trims still shift as though vapor is flowing when purge is commanded closed, the module treats it as excess purge flow.
How the car detected itDuring a non-purge window, typically at idle or during deceleration when manifold vacuum is high, the PCM monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor with the purge valve commanded closed and the vent valve open. Tank vacuum that exceeds a calibrated threshold, or that continues to increase, sets the code. Because the purge valve is normally closed when de-energized, either a mechanical leak through the valve or a control circuit holding it energized will produce that vacuum, and the two have to be separated before any part is replaced.
A trouble code records what a control module measured. It does not identify which part failed. Test before replacing anything.

Continued vacuum on the tank strains the fuel pump and can deform a plastic tank in severe cases. If a saturated canister is feeding liquid fuel forward, the intake and any replacement purge valve keep getting contaminated.

Whether the tank hisses when you open the fuel cap
A strong inrush of air means the tank is holding vacuum, which confirms the condition is real and not just a sensor reading.

The vent valve state
A vent valve stuck closed causes the same tank vacuum as a leaking purge valve. Ruling it out early prevents a common wrong repair on this code.
Whether the purge control wire is shorted to ground
A short to ground, or a module driver stuck on, holds a mechanically perfect purge valve open. Checking this before condemning the valve prevents replacing a good part and having the new one held open too.
Fueling habits and canister condition
Repeatedly topping off after the pump clicks pushes liquid fuel into the canister, which sticks purge valves open. Without correcting this, the replacement valve fails too.
Fuel trims at idle
Vapor entering the intake with no purge commanded skews trims and often produces companion lean or rich codes that corroborate the diagnosis.
Record all codes, freeze frame, and fuel trims

Start the engine, let it idle, confirm the purge valve is commanded closed, and watch the fuel tank pressure signal. Vacuum that steadily builds means manifold vacuum is reaching the tank. Stable atmospheric pressure means the condition is intermittent.

Command the vent valve open, or unplug it so it defaults open, and watch whether the tank vacuum releases. If disconnecting the vent valve fixes the vacuum, the vent valve is the fault and the purge valve is innocent. This test separates the two causes before any part is bought.

Bench test the purge valve for sealing

Remove the valve and apply vacuum with a hand pump to the intake side with the valve de-energized. A good valve holds vacuum indefinitely. Any decay means it is leaking through. Energize it and confirm it opens freely.

Unplug the purge valve with the engine idling and watch fuel tank pressure and idle quality. The valve is normally closed when de-energized, so the result tells you which branch you are in. If the tank vacuum disappears the moment the valve is unplugged, the valve was being held open electrically: check the control wire for a short to ground and the module driver for a stuck-on output. If the vacuum persists with the valve unplugged and de-energized, the valve is stuck open mechanically, or another path is connecting the tank to manifold vacuum.

Inspect the canister for fuel saturation and the lines for damage

Lift the canister and judge its weight, and look for liquid fuel at the purge line. A saturated canister explains a stuck valve and will ruin the replacement. Check the vapor lines between the tank, canister, and purge valve for cracks and collapsed sections.

US independent shop ranges, parts and labor. Purge valve cost depends heavily on whether it is on top of the engine or buried. Canister replacement is the expensive outcome and often requires lowering or dropping the tank on some designs. Module replacement includes programming, which is the larger share of that figure.
- Replacing the purge valve when a vent valve stuck closed was producing the tank vacuum. Always prove which side is causing it.
- Replacing the purge valve when the control circuit was holding it open. A valve that seals as soon as it is unplugged is behaving correctly, and the new valve will be held open by the same short or stuck driver.
