Loss of a valid speed signal typically disables cruise control, degrades automatic transmission shift quality, and can leave the speedometer dead. If the cause is a wheel speed sensor, ABS and stability control are likely disabled too, which is a genuine safety reduction in poor conditions - that raises this above a purely emissions-related fault.

Vehicle Speed Sensor "A" Malfunction
The computer is not getting a believable vehicle speed signal. On many vehicles built in the last two decades there is no dedicated speed sensor - speed is derived from the ABS wheel speed sensors or the transmission output shaft sensor and shared over the data network. Which applies to your vehicle depends on its architecture, so this code often points at a wheel speed sensor or a communication fault rather than a speed sensor.
The PCM needs vehicle speed for shift scheduling, torque converter lockup, cruise control, idle control, and several emissions monitors. It sources that value either from a discrete vehicle speed sensor at the transmission output, from the transmission output shaft speed sensor, or as a broadcast message from the ABS module. P0500 sets when that value is absent or implausible against other data the PCM holds - engine speed, load, gear, and time. The letter A designates the primary speed input for that vehicle, which is architecture-specific.
How the car detected itThe PCM compares the reported speed against what it should be given engine RPM, current gear ratio, and engine load. If the engine is clearly propelling the vehicle but speed reads zero, or if the value jumps in ways no vehicle could physically follow, the code sets. On network-sourced systems, the absence of the speed message on the bus for a defined period will also set it.
A trouble code records what a control module measured. It does not identify which part failed. Test before replacing anything.

- Harsh or erratic shifting and a torque converter that will not lock up, which increases transmission heat and long-term wear. Cruise control stays inoperative. A dead speedometer is a legal problem in most jurisdictions. If ABS is disabled, wheel lockup under hard braking becomes possible again.

In order. Each of these is cheaper or faster than what follows it, and each one can make the rest unnecessary.
Whether the ABS, traction, or stability lights are also on
A wheel speed sensor fault is a frequent origin of P0500 on vehicles that source speed from ABS. If those lights are on, that is where the diagnosis starts and the transmission is probably innocent.
Whether the speedometer works
A dead speedometer with a working odometer, or the reverse, tells you where in the chain the signal is being lost. A perfectly normal speedometer alongside P0500 points at a network or module fault rather than a sensor.
Codes in every module, not just the engine
Scanning the PCM alone is a common reason this code gets misdiagnosed. The causative code usually lives in the ABS or transmission module.
Non-standard tire sizes, wheel changes, gear ratio changes, or a speed-modification device
These produce implausible speed values with nothing broken. Aftermarket speedometer correction boxes and lockout devices are a real and frequently overlooked cause.
Recent transmission, axle, or brake work
A sensor left unplugged, a tone ring damaged during a hub or bearing replacement, or a harness pinched during reassembly explains a large share of these.
Scan every module and record all codes

Pull codes from the PCM, transmission control module, ABS module, and instrument cluster. Note which module reports the earliest or most fundamental fault. A wheel speed sensor code in ABS alongside P0500 in the PCM identifies the cause immediately and ends the diagnosis here.

Compare the vehicle speed PID against actual road speed

Drive the vehicle with the scan tool displaying vehicle speed and compare against a GPS speed reading. Watch for the value cutting out at particular speeds, reading proportionally wrong, or dropping to zero intermittently. Have a second person operate the tool.

On ABS-sourced systems, view all four wheel speed PIDs while driving in a straight line. One wheel reading zero or erratically while the others agree isolates the failed sensor or tone ring without removing anything.

Inspect the speed sensor and its tone ring

Locate the sensor - transmission output, transfer case, or wheel hub, depending on the vehicle - and remove it. Look for metal debris clinging to a magnetic tip, a chipped or cracked tone ring, and a sensor tip that has been rubbing. Sensor location varies by vehicle, so use service information rather than guessing.

Check the sensor output signal

With the wheel or driveshaft turning, measure the sensor output. A variable-reluctance sensor produces an AC voltage that rises with speed and can be read on a meter's AC range. A Hall-effect sensor produces a square-wave switching output best seen on a scope. Which type you have varies by vehicle. Support the vehicle properly on stands and keep clear of rotating components.

Check the wiring, including the shield ground

Speed sensor circuits are frequently shielded twisted pairs, and a broken or poorly grounded shield lets electrical noise corrupt the signal without any obvious open circuit. Check continuity of both signal wires, check for shorts to ground and to each other, and verify the shield is grounded at its intended point.

Test for a network communication fault on bus-sourced systems

If the ABS module reports correct wheel speeds but the PCM sees none, the problem is the message path. Check for communication codes, check bus health, and look for a module that has dropped off the network intermittently.

After the fix, confirm the speed value tracks correctly from a standstill through highway speed, that cruise control engages, and that shifting is normal. Then confirm the affected readiness monitors complete, since several of them require valid vehicle speed to run.

A discrete speed sensor at the transmission is usually a modest job unless it sits behind an axle or subframe. Wheel speed sensors are cheap in parts but can seize in the knuckle and turn into a hub replacement. Anything involving the ABS module or the network is where the cost climbs, and it deserves a firm diagnosis before you authorize it.
- Replacing a transmission speed sensor on a vehicle that does not have one, because the code name says vehicle speed sensor.
