Two very different situations produce this code. If the sensor is lying, it is a driveability nuisance. If line pressure is genuinely wrong, clutch packs slip and burn, and the damage accumulates with every mile driven. Limp mode can also engage without warning in traffic.

Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch B Circuit Range/Performance
The transmission computer is reading a fluid pressure signal that doesn't match the pressure it should be seeing for the gear and load it commanded. The signal is electrically valid, it just doesn't make sense.
Range/performance is a rationality fault, distinct from a circuit high or circuit low code. The transmission control module builds an expected line pressure from commanded solenoid duty, gear, throttle, and fluid temperature, then compares that model against what sensor or switch B actually reports. Persistent disagreement sets P0846. Which physical sensor or pressure switch carries the B designation varies by manufacturer and transmission, so confirm against factory information before probing anything.
How the car detected itThe module runs the comparison during defined operating windows, typically including a key-on engine-off check where the circuit should report essentially no pressure, and during commanded pressure changes across shifts. Disagreement beyond a calibrated margin, held for a set time or across a set number of samples, confirms the code. On switch-based systems the logic is simpler: the switch pattern must match the pattern expected for the commanded gear.
A trouble code records what a control module measured. It does not identify which part failed. Test before replacing anything.

- If pressure is genuinely low, clutches and bands slip under load and shed friction material into the fluid, which then circulates through the valve body and accelerates the failure. A problem that starts as a several-hundred-dollar sensor or valve body repair becomes a full overhaul. If the transmission drops into limp mode on a highway on-ramp, the inability to downshift is a real safety issue.

Many vehicles show no symptom at all beyond the warning light. The absence of a symptom does not mean the fault is not real.

Ordering reflects how often each cause is responsible in general, not a probability for your vehicle. Confirm by testing.
In order. Each of these is cheaper or faster than what follows it, and each one can make the rest unnecessary.
Transmission fluid level and condition
Low fluid aerates and produces genuinely erratic pressure. Burnt or dark fluid tells you clutch material is already circulating. Follow the vehicle's exact procedure, since many transmissions have no dipstick and require the fluid at a specific temperature to check correctly.
Every stored code, including transmission-specific ones behind a P0700
Shift ratio codes, solenoid circuit codes, or a second pressure code completely change the priority order. P0846 sitting alone means something different from P0846 alongside a gear ratio fault.
The pressure reading at key-on with the engine off
With no pump turning, the circuit should report essentially no pressure. A reading stuck high with the engine off implicates the sensor or its wiring immediately, and costs nothing to check.
The transmission case pass-through connector for fluid intrusion
Automatic transmission fluid wicking up the internal harness into the external connector is a well-known failure mode on several designs. It produces exactly this kind of signal fault and is cheap to find.
Whether shift quality has actually changed
Normal shift feel with the code stored points toward a sensor or signal problem. Harshness, flare, or slipping points toward genuine hydraulic trouble and changes how urgently the car should come off the road.
Record freeze frame and pull codes from the transmission module directly

Capture the conditions the code set under before clearing anything. Read transmission module codes directly rather than relying only on generic OBD-II, which often shows just P0700 as a pointer.

Check fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure

Follow the exact procedure for the vehicle, including required fluid temperature. Note colour, smell, and whether the fluid is foamy. Foam means air is being drawn in and pressure will genuinely fluctuate.

Verify the sensor's zero point with the engine off

Turn the key on without starting and read the pressure value from sensor or switch B in live data. Do the same on the other pressure channels for comparison.
ExpectedA reading at or near zero pressure. An offset at rest indicates a drifted sensor or a circuit fault, not a hydraulic problem.
Compare commanded against actual pressure in live data while driving

Log commanded line pressure and the sensor B reading through a range of loads and shifts. Look for whether the reading tracks command with a fixed offset, tracks with a lag, or ignores command entirely.
ExpectedActual should follow commanded closely. A fixed offset suggests a drifted sensor; erratic or non-responsive suggests the circuit or hydraulics.
Wiggle test the external and case connectors while logging

With live data running, manipulate the transmission case connector and harness. Open the connector and check both halves for oil, corrosion, spread terminals, and green residue.
ExpectedNo change in live data and clean, dry, tight terminals. Fluid inside the connector is a finding on its own.
Perform circuit checks from module to sensor

Verify reference voltage, ground integrity, and signal continuity along the sensor circuit, including resistance checks for high resistance rather than just continuity. Pin assignments are vehicle-specific and must come from factory wiring diagrams.

Put a mechanical gauge on the hydraulic test port

This is the step that decides the case. Compare true hydraulic pressure at the manufacturer's test port against what the module reports, at their specified temperature and operating conditions. Not every transmission has an accessible port; where none exists, the shop must rely on correlation between multiple pressure channels.
ExpectedGauge matching the reported value means the sensor is honest and the hydraulics are the problem. Gauge disagreeing with the report means the sensor or circuit is lying.

If real pressure is out of specification, the fault is hydraulic: pressure control solenoid, a stuck valve or worn bore in the valve body, a failing pump, or an internal circuit leak past worn seals. If real pressure is correct, replace the sensor or repair the circuit. Do not skip this fork.

Sensor cost is modest but most designs put the sensor inside the transmission, so the labour to drop the pan or valve body dominates the bill. Anything requiring the valve body out, or the unit out, moves into four figures quickly.
- Replacing the pressure sensor without ever putting a mechanical gauge on the transmission. The code is a disagreement between modelled and reported pressure — it does not say which side is wrong, and the sensor is frequently reporting a genuine hydraulic problem accurately.
- Ignoring fluid level and condition because the code sounds electrical. Aerated fluid produces genuinely unstable pressure.
- Ordering a flush as a first move on a transmission with burnt fluid. If clutch material is already circulating, a flush does not undo the wear and can dislodge debris.
- Missing automatic transmission fluid wicked into the case connector, which is a known failure point and looks like a sensor fault.
- Clearing adaptations and calling the job done. Adaptation resets mask symptoms for a few hundred miles without addressing the cause.
