Life is strongly tied to coolant condition — degraded or mixed coolant causes corrosion and deposits that jam the valve, so following the manufacturer's coolant service interval with the specified coolant type is the main thing that extends it.
An engine has to get hot quickly and then stay within a narrow band. The thermostat does both by blocking coolant from reaching the radiator until the engine warms up, then opening to let heat out. Stuck open, the engine never fully warms: the heater blows lukewarm, fuel economy drops, the computer may hold a richer mixture, and you get a code for the engine being below expected temperature. Stuck closed is a different category of problem entirely — coolant cannot reach the radiator, temperature climbs fast, and an overheated engine can warp a head, blow a head gasket, or seize. If the temperature gauge is climbing into the red or a hot warning appears, pull over and shut the engine off. Continuing to drive an overheating engine converts a small repair into an engine replacement, sometimes within minutes.
Inside the housing is a sealed capsule of wax that is chosen to melt at a specific temperature. When coolant reaches that temperature the wax melts and expands sharply, driving a piston that pushes the valve open against a spring. As the engine cools the wax solidifies and the spring closes the valve. The result is a purely mechanical, self-regulating valve that modulates rather than simply switching — it hunts toward a position that holds coolant temperature near its rating. That rating is chosen by the manufacturer to suit the engine's calibration, emissions strategy, and materials, so fitting a cooler thermostat does not make an engine safer; it makes the computer run the engine outside its designed temperature window and can cause codes and worse economy. Many engines also include a bypass circuit so coolant keeps circulating through the block while the thermostat is closed, preventing hot spots. Some modern engines use an electronically controlled or heated thermostat, where the computer can force it open earlier for load or emissions reasons, and those can fail electrically as well as mechanically.
Stuck open is the most common and least dangerous: the wax element weakens or debris holds the valve off its seat, so the engine runs cool permanently. Expect poor heat, worse fuel economy, and a below-temperature code. Stuck closed is less common and far more serious — the valve never opens, coolant cannot dump heat at the radiator, and the engine overheats quickly under load. Slow or lazy operation gives temperature that swings noticeably instead of holding steady. Corrosion and debris from neglected or contaminated coolant jam the mechanism, which is the main argument for coolant service intervals. The housing itself, often plastic on modern engines, cracks and leaks. Gasket and seal failure produces a coolant leak at the housing. Electronic thermostats add circuit and control faults. Critically, several other faults produce the same symptoms: a low coolant level, a failed water pump, a clogged radiator, a failed cooling fan, a collapsed lower hose, air trapped in the system after a poor coolant fill, or a head gasket leak pushing combustion gases into the coolant all cause overheating with a perfectly good thermostat.

These symptoms overlap with several other faults. They are a reason to test this component, not evidence that it has failed.
Watch the warm-up curve in live data, because that is what actually diagnoses this part. Start cold, log engine coolant temperature, and observe how long it takes to reach the normal operating range and whether it holds there. A temperature that rises slowly, plateaus below the normal range, or drops noticeably at highway speed indicates a thermostat stuck or leaking open. Compare the reading against the dash gauge, since dash gauges on many vehicles are damped and hide real variation. Then confirm with an infrared thermometer at the hoses. From cold, the upper radiator hose should stay comparatively cool while the engine warms, then warm rapidly once the thermostat opens — a distinct, fairly sudden transition is a healthy thermostat. An upper hose that heats up steadily from the start means the valve is open; an engine climbing toward overheat with the upper hose still cool and the radiator cold means the valve is closed and coolant is not circulating, which is the dangerous case. Before condemning the thermostat for an overheating complaint, verify the basics that mimic it: coolant level with the engine cold, no air pockets after any recent cooling work, the fan commanding on, the radiator not blocked externally or internally, and the water pump actually circulating. Perform a combustion leak test on the coolant if you suspect a head gasket, because replacing a thermostat will not fix that and the engine will overheat again. A removed thermostat can be verified directly by heating it in water with a thermometer and watching for the valve to open near its stamped rating and close fully as it cools, which is a genuine and conclusive bench test. Never open a cooling system while it is hot — pressurized coolant causes severe burns.
Specification values differ between manufacturers and model years. Where a figure is not genuinely standard across OBD-II vehicles, check it against service information for your specific vehicle rather than a generic number.
In a housing where the upper or lower radiator hose meets the engine, on the cylinder head or the intake manifold. On many modern engines it comes as a sealed assembly with its own housing and cannot be replaced separately. Some engines place it in an awkward spot behind accessories or under the intake, and some turbocharged and V-configuration engines bury it deeply. Exact location, orientation, and rating vary by make and engine and should be confirmed for the specific vehicle.
