Car Shakes at Idle
Shaking that appears at idle and disappears once you are moving comes from one of three families: a cylinder not contributing evenly, an idle the engine cannot hold steady, or a broken mount letting normal engine vibration into the body. They feel different, and you can separate them from the driver's seat in under a minute. Watch the tachometer while it shakes. If the needle dips or bobs in time with the vibration, the engine's output really is uneven - misfire, unmetered air, or fuel delivery. A steady needle is much weaker evidence in the other direction: most modern cluster tachometers are heavily damped and driven by an averaged RPM message, so a single-cylinder misfire or a mild imbalance often produces no visible needle movement at all. A steady needle points toward something transmitting normal engine vibration into the structure - engine or transmission mounts, an exhaust hanger, an accessory bearing - but it does not rule out a misfire. Confirm with misfire counters and fuel trims on a scan tool before you drop the engine from the list. Then shift from Drive to Neutral with your foot firmly on the brake. If the shake largely goes away, the driveline is loading the engine, which points at mounts or the torque converter. If it feels identical in Park, Neutral and Drive, the engine itself is the source. Those two observations cost nothing and eliminate whole branches of the list before anyone opens the hood.
Idle shake is usually not dangerous by itself, but a few versions of it are. Stop and get it towed if the check engine light is flashing, if you smell raw fuel or exhaust inside the cabin, if the temperature gauge is rising along with the shake, or if the shake is accompanied by a knocking or metallic noise that changes with engine speed. A completely broken engine mount can also let the engine move far enough to strain a fuel line, a coolant hose, or a wiring harness - that is worth inspecting rather than driving on indefinitely. Any check done with the engine running belongs to someone standing clear of belts, pulleys and cooling fans, which on many vehicles can start on their own.
Each question splits the possibilities. Answer them in order — by the end you should have a much shorter list than you started with.
Does the tachometer needle dip or bob in time with the shake?
- If yes
- Engine output really is uneven. Look at misfire, unmetered air, fuel delivery, or idle control. Live data - fuel trims, misfire counters, commanded idle versus actual - will localize it.
- If no
- A steady needle points toward something transmitting normal engine vibration into the body: engine or transmission mounts, an exhaust pipe touching the body or a broken hanger, a failing accessory pulley or belt tensioner bearing. Treat that as a lead, not proof - most modern tachometers are damped enough to hide a single-cylinder misfire, so check misfire counters and fuel trims on a scan tool before you rule the engine out.
Does the shake largely go away when you shift into Neutral or Park?
- If yes
- Load-related. Hydraulic engine mounts fail exactly this way - fine unloaded, terrible in gear. Also consider transmission mounts and, less often, a torque converter or flexplate problem.
- If no
- Identical in P, N and D means the engine is the source regardless of driveline load - a cylinder problem, a vacuum leak, or unstable idle control.
Does it appear or worsen the moment the A/C compressor engages or the radiator fans come on?
- If yes
- The idle cannot absorb the added load. Suspect a dirty throttle body, carbon on the intake valves (common on direct-injection engines), a failing idle air control valve on older engines, weak charging voltage, or a cylinder already marginal that only shows up under extra load.
- If no
- Accessory load is not the trigger, so focus on the constant conditions instead - mounts, misfire, vacuum leaks.
Is it clearly worse when the engine is cold and better once fully warm?
- If yes
- Points to cold-start enrichment or a cylinder that seals poorly when cold: a coolant temperature sensor reporting wrong, a sticky injector, carbon deposits, or genuinely low compression that improves as parts expand.
- If no
- If it is worse when hot, think heat-related coil or injector breakdown, an EGR valve hanging open once it warms, or a vacuum leak through a crack that opens as the plastic expands. If it never changes, mounts and mechanical causes move up.
Is the check engine light on, or has it ever flashed?
- If yes
- Pull the codes immediately. Misfire counters in live data can name the exact cylinder, which turns a broad guess into a specific test. A light that has ever flashed means the misfire was severe enough to threaten the converter.
- If no
- No stored code usually means any imbalance is below the misfire detection threshold - but check pending codes too, and remember the misfire monitor is suspended in conditions it cannot trust: rough roads, low fuel level, an engine not yet up to temperature, and certain other pending faults. A two-trip misfire can also exist without the lamp being on. Mounts, mild vacuum leaks and fuel trim drift live in this space, and fuel trim readings are worth taking even with no code set.
Do you hear a hiss, whistle, or sucking sound under the hood at idle that changes when you blip the throttle?
- If yes
- Unmetered air. Look at the intake tube between the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body, the PCV hoses, the brake booster hose and its check valve, and the intake manifold gasket. Confirm with a smoke test rather than by ear alone.
- If no
- Small vacuum leaks are often silent, so this does not rule one out. Read long-term fuel trim at idle - a large positive number that shrinks as RPM rises is the real evidence.

Collapsed, torn, or leaking engine or transmission mount
Very commonMounts isolate normal engine vibration from the body. Many modern mounts are hydraulic, filled with fluid, and when one leaks out the isolation disappears. The signature is a shake that is much worse in Drive with the brake held than in Neutral, and often worse again in Reverse.
How to checkDo the load test with the vehicle restrained and nobody in its path. Set the parking brake, chock the wheels, and have the observer stand to the SIDE of the engine bay - never in front of or behind the vehicle, and clear of belts, pulleys and the cooling fan. With the engine idling, the driver keeps firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal and briefly selects Drive, then Reverse, while the observer watches for excessive engine lift or rock. Then shut the engine off and inspect: a visible tear in the rubber, or oily residue around a hydraulic mount, is the confirming evidence. Replace a mount only when movement is clearly excessive for that vehicle or the mount is visibly torn or leaking - typically $250 to $800 per mount depending on access.

Cylinder misfire from a spark plug, ignition coil, or injector
Very commonA single weak cylinder is most obvious at idle, where there are fewest combustion events per second to smooth things out and the engine has no momentum to hide behind. Once you are moving it disappears into the driveline.
How to checkScan for cylinder-specific misfire codes and watch misfire counters at idle. Swap the coil to another cylinder and see whether the count follows it. If it does not, test the plug, then the injector, then compression on that cylinder. Replace only the part the counter follows. Plugs and coils commonly $200 to $700.

Vacuum leak letting in unmetered air
CommonAt idle the throttle is nearly closed and manifold vacuum is at its highest, so a leak has the biggest proportional effect exactly then. Cracked intake tubes, split PCV hoses, a leaking brake booster hose, a failed intake manifold gasket, and a purge valve stuck open are the usual sources.
How to checkLong-term fuel trim well positive at idle and closer to normal at 2,500 RPM is the classic pattern. Confirm the location with a smoke test - guessing by spraying flammable cleaner around the intake is a fire risk and is imprecise. Repair typically $150 to $700.

Dirty throttle body or carbon-fouled intake valves
CommonCarbon around the throttle plate changes the airflow the computer expects at a given opening. On direct-injection engines the intake valves get no fuel washing over them, so deposits build on the valve backs and disrupt airflow into the cylinder. Both show up worst at idle.
How to checkInspect the throttle bore visually with the engine off and the key out - never with the engine running, since electronic throttle plates can move on their own. For intake valve deposits, a borescope through the intake port is the honest test. Throttle body cleaning typically $100 to $250 and may require a relearn procedure; walnut-shell blasting of intake valves commonly $400 to $1,000.

EGR valve leaking or stuck partially open at idle
OccasionalExhaust gas recirculation is supposed to be closed at idle. A valve held open by carbon dilutes the intake charge at exactly the point the engine can least tolerate it, producing a rough, sometimes stalling idle.
How to checkCompare commanded versus actual EGR position on a scan tool and inspect the valve and passages for carbon with the engine off and cool. A valve hung open typically shows as excessive-flow or position-error codes rather than insufficient-flow ones. Sometimes cleaning is sufficient. Typically $200 to $700 with labor.

Idle air control fault or throttle relearn needed after service
OccasionalOlder engines use a separate idle air control valve that sticks with age. Electronic throttle engines often need an idle relearn after battery disconnection or throttle body cleaning, and until it is done the idle can hunt or sag.
How to checkWatch commanded idle speed against actual on live data. If the computer is asking for a stable idle and not getting it, the air path is at fault. IAC valve replacement typically $150 to $400; a relearn is usually included in a shop's diagnostic time.

Fuel delivery problem - weak pump, restricted filter, dirty injectors
OccasionalLow fuel pressure or poor injector spray pattern makes the mixture uneven cylinder to cylinder. This often shows at idle as a light, irregular stumble rather than a clear miss, and may worsen under load too.
How to checkMeasure fuel pressure at the manufacturer's test port with the correct gauge, and where possible hold it to check for leak-down - the correct pressure value is vehicle-specific. Depressurize the system before connecting or disconnecting anything, keep the gauge and hose secured away from hot and moving parts, and never drive the vehicle with a gauge teed into a live fuel line. Injector cleaning or replacement typically $150 to $700; fuel pump replacement commonly $500 to $1,200.

Exhaust leak upstream of the oxygen sensor
OccasionalA cracked manifold or a leaking flange ahead of the sensor lets outside air in, the sensor reads lean, and the computer adds fuel it does not need. The idle goes rough and the exhaust ticks, usually loudest when cold before the metal expands and seals.
How to checkListen for a tick at cold start that fades when warm, and look for black soot streaks at gaskets and flanges once the exhaust is cool enough to touch. Repair ranges widely, roughly $200 to $1,200 depending on whether it is a gasket or a cracked manifold.

Low compression, burnt valve, or worn timing chain
RareMechanical wear produces an idle shake that never improves and usually comes with reduced power and poorer economy. A stretched timing chain retards valve timing across the whole engine.
How to checkCompression test, then leak-down on any weak cylinder to find where pressure escapes. Disable fuel and ignition before cranking with the plugs out, and keep clear of the plug holes. Verify cam timing on a scan tool or against the engine's timing marks. Repairs range from around $1,000 to engine replacement.

Cracked flexplate or torque converter problem
RareOn automatics, a cracked flexplate or a converter with an internal fault produces a vibration that is present in gear and much reduced in Neutral - which is why it gets mistaken for a mount. It often comes with an intermittent metallic rattle at idle.
How to checkWith the engine off and the key out, inspect the flexplate through the starter opening for cracks around the bolt circle, and separately listen for a rattle that changes in Drive versus Neutral. Repair requires transmission removal, commonly $1,200 to $3,000.
