Flashing Check Engine Light
A flashing check engine light means the engine is misfiring right now, badly enough that raw unburned fuel is passing into the exhaust. That fuel ignites inside the catalytic converter instead of the cylinder. The converter can overheat to the point of melting internally within minutes, and a glowing-hot converter under a car parked on dry grass is a real fire risk. So: stop driving as soon as it is safe. No hard acceleration, no hills, no towing, no highway merging. If the light stops flashing and returns to steady, the misfire has stopped for the moment - the fault has not gone away, and it will return under load. That is a reason to get off the road, not a reason to continue gently. The repair that caused this is almost always cheaper than the converter it damages, which is the whole argument for stopping. Mechanically, a misfire is a failure of ignition, fuel or compression in a specific cylinder. The stored code tells you which one: P0301 through P0308 name the cylinder by number, and P0300 means the computer counted misfires spread across several cylinders, which points instead at something shared - fuel pressure, a large vacuum leak, timing, or bad fuel.
This is one of the few dash warnings that genuinely means stop. An overheating catalytic converter can glow red and ignite grass, leaves or debris beneath the vehicle, so park on pavement rather than on a shoulder covered in dry vegetation. A severe misfire also makes power delivery unpredictable, so the engine can stumble exactly when you need throttle to merge or clear an intersection. If you smell raw fuel, smell something hot and acrid, or see smoke from under the car, shut the engine off, get everyone away from it, and have it towed rather than driven. Any diagnostic test that involves running the engine should be brief and done with the vehicle parked, the parking brake set and the wheels chocked - not on a road test to reproduce the misfire, which is how a damaged converter becomes a destroyed one.
Each question splits the possibilities. Answer them in order — by the end you should have a much shorter list than you started with.
Does it flash only under acceleration or load, and go steady when you idle or coast?
- If yes
- Load-dependent breakdown. Under cylinder pressure it takes far more voltage to jump the plug gap, so a worn plug or a coil with weakening insulation fails only when it is working hardest. Fuel delivery that cannot keep up under load - weak pump, restricted filter, clogged injector - behaves the same way. This still means stop. The misfire returns the moment load returns, and each occurrence dumps raw fuel into a converter that is already hot, so the next hill or merge does the damage. Get it off the road and diagnosed rather than driving gently on it.
- If no
- Flashing at idle too means a more severe fault: a cylinder contributing nothing at all, a large vacuum leak, or a mechanical problem such as low compression or a valvetrain failure. Do not drive it.
Is the engine visibly shaking and running rough while the light flashes?
- If yes
- Misfire confirmed. Get the cylinder-specific code - it eliminates most of the guesswork immediately.
- If no
- Verify it is actually flashing rather than a dim or intermittent bulb. A flashing MIL with no felt roughness is unusual and worth scanning before you drive anywhere on it.
Did this start right after a fuel fill-up?
- If yes
- Suspect the fuel itself: water contamination from a station's tank, or simply the wrong fuel. Stop burning it. Draining and refilling is cheaper than chasing parts, typically $150 to $500 for a tank drain and refill.
- If no
- Fuel quality drops down the list and normal component failure moves up.
Did it begin after heavy rain, driving through standing water, or a car wash?
- If yes
- Look for water in the spark plug wells and on the coil boots, with the engine off and cool. Water bridges the boot to the cylinder head and the spark takes the easy path. Drying the wells often fixes it outright, though a soaked coil sometimes fails permanently - confirm by re-reading the misfire counters after drying rather than assuming.
- If no
- Environmental moisture is not the trigger, so focus on wear, fuel and mechanical causes.
Have the spark plugs, coils, or injectors been serviced recently?
- If yes
- Check that work first. Wrong plug type or gap, a boot not fully seated, a cracked coil from over-tightening, a plug not torqued down, or a connector left unplugged all produce exactly this. It is far more likely than a coincidental new failure.
- If no
- Ordinary wear pattern. Original-mileage plugs and coils on a high-mileage engine are the usual starting point.
If you swap the suspect coil to a different cylinder, clear the codes and misfire counters, and run the engine only briefly at idle, does the misfire move to the cylinder the coil moved to?
- If yes
- The coil is the fault. Clearing first is what makes the result readable - without it the old cylinder-specific code is still stored and the retest tells you nothing. This costs nothing and is about as strong as a no-cost test gets, which beats replacing all of them on suspicion. Single coil replacement typically $150 to $400 installed.
- If no
- The misfire stayed with the cylinder, so the coil is exonerated. Next is the spark plug in that hole, then the injector (swap it the same way, clearing codes again), then a compression and leak-down test of that cylinder. A marginal coil can still pass a brief idle test, so if everything else checks out, come back to it.

Failed ignition coil
Very commonOn coil-on-plug engines each cylinder has its own coil sitting in the hot engine bay. Insulation breaks down with heat and age, and the coil typically fails under load first before failing entirely.
How to checkWith the engine off and cool, swap the coil with a neighbouring cylinder. Then clear the stored codes and the misfire counters - without clearing, the old cylinder-specific code is still present and the retest is unreadable. Restart and run the engine only briefly at idle, then re-read. If the cylinder-specific misfire has moved to the cylinder the coil moved to, the coil is the fault - about as strong as a no-cost test gets. If the misfire stays put, the coil is exonerated and the plug, then the injector, then compression on that cylinder are next. A marginal coil can pass at idle, so a clean brief test does not fully clear it if nothing else is found. Do not road-test to reproduce the misfire while the light is flashing. Keep hands, sleeves and tools clear of the belt and cooling fan, which can start without warning. Typically $150 to $400 installed for one coil.

Worn, fouled, cracked or incorrectly gapped spark plug
Very commonAs the electrode erodes the gap widens and required firing voltage rises until the coil can no longer supply it under compression. A cracked insulator or an oil- or fuel-fouled plug does the same. Plug service intervals vary widely by engine and plug type.
How to checkWith the engine off and cool, pull the plug from the misfiring cylinder and read it - the appearance tells you a great deal: oil fouling, fuel washing, overheating, physical damage. Clear the well of debris before removing the plug so nothing falls into the cylinder. Replace as a full set, using the type and gap the manufacturer specifies, then confirm the misfire counter for that cylinder has stopped accumulating before calling it fixed. Typically $150 to $600 depending on engine access.

Fuel injector clogged, leaking, or electrically failed
CommonAn injector that has partially clogged leans out its cylinder; one stuck open floods it and washes the plug. Electrical failure of the winding or its driver circuit kills the cylinder outright.
How to checkListen with a stethoscope or long screwdriver for the injector's click, keeping the tool and your hands clear of the belt and fan. Check its resistance and its command signal with the engine off. Or swap injectors between cylinders - depressurise the fuel system first, engine off and cool, no ignition source nearby - then clear the codes and counters and see whether the misfire follows the injector. Injector replacement commonly $250 to $700 for port injection and considerably more for direct injection, and only once a swap or electrical test has confirmed it.

Vacuum leak large enough to lean out a cylinder or a bank
OccasionalA collapsed or disconnected hose, a failed intake manifold gasket, or a torn intake boot lets in unmeasured air. If the leak sits near one runner it starves that cylinder specifically.
How to checkRead fuel trims - large positive numbers at idle that improve with RPM point to unmetered air - then confirm with a smoke test and repair what the smoke test actually shows rather than replacing gaskets on suspicion. Repair typically $150 to $700 depending on what is leaking.

Bad or contaminated fuel
OccasionalWater in the fuel does not burn, and a slug of it kills combustion outright. Filling with the wrong fuel entirely produces immediate, severe misfire. Low octane on its own is a different mechanism: it causes detonation of a charge that did ignite, which shows up as knock, knock-sensor timing retard and lost power rather than the crankshaft-deceleration events the misfire monitor counts - so it explains a rattle and a flat engine far more often than a flashing light.
How to checkTiming relative to the last fill-up is the main evidence. With the fuel system depressurised, the engine off and cool, and no ignition source nearby, draw a sample into a clear container - water separates visibly at the bottom. Tank drain and refill commonly $150 to $500.

Mechanical fault: low compression, burnt valve, broken valve spring, jumped timing
OccasionalA cylinder that cannot seal or cannot breathe will not fire regardless of spark and fuel. A stretched timing chain or slipped belt shifts valve events enough to kill combustion across the engine.
How to checkCompression test, then a leak-down test on any low cylinder to locate where the pressure escapes - past rings, past intake or exhaust valves, or into the coolant. Disable fuel and ignition before cranking with the plugs out, keep clear of the open plug holes, and remember a leak-down test can spin the crankshaft suddenly, so the engine must be locked at TDC for that cylinder and your hands and tools kept off the pulley. Verify cam timing against the engine's marks. Repairs here range from several hundred dollars to engine replacement.

Restricted exhaust from a converter already melted internally
RareA converter destroyed by earlier misfire can plug and choke the engine, which then misfires further. Cause and consequence become circular, which is another reason not to keep driving on a flashing light.
How to checkMeasure exhaust backpressure at an upstream oxygen sensor port - a restriction raises backpressure, and acceptable values are vehicle-specific - or watch for manifold vacuum that starts normal and falls at a held raised RPM. Let the exhaust cool before removing a sensor. Confirm the restriction by measurement and find what caused it before replacing anything; a converter fitted behind an uncorrected misfire fails again. Converter replacement commonly $900 to $2,800 and higher on some vehicles.

Wiring, connector, crank/cam correlation, or PCM driver failure
RareChafed injector or coil wiring, a corroded connector, a crankshaft-to-camshaft correlation fault, or a failed output driver in the computer can all produce misfire codes that look like part failure.
How to checkInspect and wiggle-test the harness to the affected cylinder with live data running - vehicle parked, parking brake set, wheels chocked, hands and leads clear of the belt and fan - verify power and ground at the connector, and check crank/cam correlation on a scan tool before condemning the module. Diagnostic labor typically $120 to $200 per hour.
