ABS Warning Light
Also called: anti-lock brake light, ABS lamp, anti-lock warning

An amber circle with the letters ABS inside it and a curved bracket on each side of the circle. Some vehicles spell out ANTI-LOCK or ABS in plain text instead of using the symbol.
With the amber ABS lamp alone: keep driving, but brake earlier and leave extra following distance, because you should now assume the wheels can lock in a panic stop. In an emergency stop without ABS, press hard, and if you feel the wheels lock and the steering go dead, ease off slightly and reapply rather than standing on the pedal. Be extra cautious in rain, snow, and ice, which is exactly where you would have relied on ABS. Get the system scanned within days rather than weeks. If the RED brake warning lamp is lit as well, that is a different situation: stop as soon as it is safe rather than finishing the trip. Check the brake fluid level once stopped, and treat the car as needing a tow — or at most a very short, low-speed drive straight to a shop — rather than continuing. Do the same if the pedal goes soft, sinks, or feels different from normal.

- With the amber lamp alone, generally yes — base brakes are unaffected by an ABS module shutting down, and the car will stop. That holds only while the pedal feels normal and holds firm, the red brake warning light is off, the fluid is at level, and you drive with the assumption that you have no anti-lock. It does not hold in bad weather, and it does not hold if the red brake light joins it, if the pedal changes, or if the brakes pulse, grab, or drag on their own — a hydraulic modulator failure can affect actual braking, not just the anti-lock function, and low fluid is a hydraulic problem in its own right. In any of those cases stop and arrange a tow rather than driving on. Anti-lock is also a safety inspection item in some states.
In most cases the anti-lock system has shut itself off and your base brakes still work — but confirm that before you rely on it: the red brake warning light must be off, and the pedal must feel normal and hold firm. Low brake fluid and hydraulic unit faults can also light this lamp, and those do affect actual braking. What an ABS shutdown by itself costs you is the wheels-not-locking function, and usually traction and stability control with it.
ABS uses a wheel speed sensor at each wheel, a control module, and a hydraulic modulator that can release and reapply pressure to individual brakes many times per second. When the module detects a fault it cannot work around, it disables itself and hands braking back to the base hydraulic system — a deliberate fail-safe, not a failure of the brakes themselves. What that costs you shows up only in an emergency stop or on a slick surface: locked wheels skid, and a skidding tire cannot steer. You can still stop, but you may not be able to steer around what you are stopping for. Stability control and traction control depend on the same wheel speed data, so they typically go down with ABS and their lights come on together. A brief ABS light at startup is normal — the module runs a self-test, and on many vehicles part of that test only completes once the car is rolling above a few miles per hour, so a light that goes out shortly after you pull away is the system passing its own check. The combination that matters most is the amber ABS light plus the red brake light. That usually means electronic brake force distribution has dropped out too, which changes front-to-rear braking balance and can let the rear wheels lock first under hard braking — and it can equally mean low fluid or a failed hydraulic circuit. That pairing is a different and far more urgent problem than the amber lamp on its own.
The ABS lamp itself does not normally flash on modern vehicles. Do not confuse it with the traction or stability control icon — a car with squiggly lines behind it — which flashes while the system is actively intervening on a slippery surface. That flashing is the system working correctly and stops when traction returns. On some older vehicles the ABS lamp could flash a blink-code sequence for diagnostics, but that is legacy behavior and the pattern is manufacturer-specific. A steadily lit ABS lamp means the system is off.

- Damaged tone ring or reluctor ring — cracked, rusted, or with missing teeth
- Broken wiring at the wheel, where the harness flexes with suspension and steering travel every mile
- Corroded connector at a wheel speed sensor, especially in road-salt regions
- Excessive wheel bearing play, which lets the sensor gap wander outside its readable range
- Weak battery or low system voltage, which can drop the module offline and set faults
- Blown ABS fuse or a failed pump motor relay
- ABS control module or hydraulic pump motor failure, including internal solder joint failures on some units
- Mismatched tire sizes or a spare of a different diameter, which makes one wheel's speed disagree with the others
- Steering angle, yaw, or lateral acceleration sensor out of calibration after an alignment, suspension repair, or airbag deployment
- Low brake fluid, which disables ABS on some vehicles — and which is a hydraulic fault to be found and fixed, not merely an ABS inconvenience
A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.
The fault has to be read from the ABS module, which most basic OBD-II code readers cannot reach — you need a scan tool with chassis system coverage. Wheel speed sensor faults are usually confirmed by watching live wheel speed data while the vehicle rolls: the bad corner reads zero, drops out, or reports a speed that disagrees with the other three. That test tells you whether the problem is the sensor, the tone ring, or the wiring between them, which is the difference between three very different repairs, and no part should be bought before it does. Check fluid level and system voltage first — both are free and both set these codes. Once repaired, codes are cleared with the scan tool, and the lamp stays off after the module passes its self-test on the next drive. Some repairs require additional steps that vary by vehicle — a scan-tool-controlled bleed if the hydraulics were opened, or a steering angle sensor calibration after alignment or steering work. Typical independent-shop ranges: wheel speed sensor $150 to $400 per corner, more when it is integrated into the wheel bearing at $350 to $900, wiring repair $100 to $400, and ABS module or hydraulic unit replacement $700 to $2,000, though module rebuild services are often much cheaper than a new assembly.
