Airbag / SRS Warning Light

Also called: SRS light, airbag light, supplemental restraint system light, air bag readiness light, the "seated person with a ball" light. Some vehicles spell it out as SRS, AIRBAG, or SERVICE AIRBAG.

What the symbol looks like

It is not the PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF indicator, which is separate text on the dash or console and is a status message, not a fault.

What to do now

Have the airbag module scanned by a shop or tool that can read restraint codes — this is a different scan from a check engine light, and a generic OBD-II reader will show nothing wrong. Before that, watch the lamp at the next key-on: a few seconds on, then off, is correct. Staying on, flashing, or never lighting at all are all faults. Until it is fixed, everyone belts up every trip, because the belts are now doing the entire job. Do not disconnect the battery hoping to reset it. Do not probe, unplug, or test airbag wiring — the yellow connectors — with a test light or multimeter, because you can fire a device with the current from a meter. If the light appeared right after body repair, a seat swap, a stereo install, or a wet carpet, say so; that is usually where the fault is.

Can I drive
Mechanically, yes — the fault does not touch engine, brakes, or steering. But assume the airbags and pretensioners will not deploy until it is repaired, so the car is protecting you roughly the way a car from before airbags did. Seat belts still work mechanically and are the whole safety system right now. Reasonable for a normal commute; not something to let sit for months, and worth fixing before a long highway trip or before regularly carrying passengers, especially children or anyone riding in a seat whose occupant sensor is the suspect. If the light came on together with a warning about a specific seat or the passenger airbag status, treat that seat as unprotected.
What it means

The airbag control module found a fault in itself or in something it monitors, and stored a code. On most vehicles it also shuts the restraint system down, so airbags and seat belt pretensioners will not fire in a crash. It does not mean an airbag is about to go off on its own, and it does not mean an airbag is broken — it means the module can no longer vouch for the system.

SRS stands for supplemental restraint system: airbags, seat belt pretensioners, occupant classification, belt buckle switches, impact sensors, and on some vehicles a battery cutoff. At every key-on the module runs a self-test, measuring the electrical resistance of each deployment loop and checking every sensor it talks to. If anything falls outside its expected range, it lights the lamp and disables deployment, because firing a device it cannot verify is more dangerous than not firing it. A fault in one circuit can disable one device or the whole system depending on the design; the lamp does not tell you which. Two things are widely misunderstood. First, the light is a notification that a monitored circuit is out of range, not a verdict that an airbag has failed — a corroded connector under a seat produces the same lamp as a dead module. Second, SRS codes live in the restraint module, not the engine computer. A generic OBD-II code reader plugged into the same connector will report no trouble codes and give a false all-clear; reading these requires a scan tool with restraint or body module access. It is also worth knowing what the absence of the light means. The lamp is supposed to illuminate for a few seconds at key-on and then go out. A lamp that never lights at all is as suspicious as one that stays on — it is a known way of hiding a disabled or deployed system, particularly on a used vehicle. In states that run a periodic safety inspection, an illuminated airbag lamp is commonly a failure item — but most US states do not have a periodic safety inspection at all, and criteria differ among those that do, so passing an inspection is not evidence that the restraint system works.

If it is flashing rather than steady

Varies by make, and it matters less than people hope. On some vehicles a flashing SRS lamp blinks out a countable fault code; on others it signals a specific condition such as stored crash data or a device that has been disabled; a few simply flash as an attention-getter. Do not read a blink count against another manufacturer's chart. Treat a flashing lamp exactly like a steady one: the restraint system has a fault and needs a proper scan.

Common reasons it comes on
  • Clock spring failure in the steering column — the flat ribbon cable that keeps the driver airbag connected as the wheel rotates. Common at higher mileage and often paired with a dead horn or non-working steering wheel buttons.
  • Connectors under the front seats. Belt buckle switches, side airbags, seat position and occupant sensors are wired down there, and the connectors get kicked, dragged by seat travel, corroded by spills, or pulled apart during cleaning.
  • Occupant classification system faults — the passenger seat weight sensor, mat, or bladder, sometimes disturbed by aftermarket seat covers, seat heaters, or a seat that has been out of the car.
  • Low or unstable system voltage. A weak battery or failing alternator can set restraint codes that look exactly like component failures.
  • Water intrusion. Leaking windshield seals, sunroof drains, door membranes or heater cores soak modules and harnesses under the carpet and console.
  • Impact or crash sensor circuit faults, including a sensor damaged in a minor front-end hit or disturbed during collision repair.
  • A previous deployment that was never properly repaired — crash data still latched in the module, a module that was reused, or a device that was never replaced.
  • Aftermarket work: seat covers over side airbag seams, alarm and stereo installs that tapped the wrong circuits, seat swaps, harness splices made with the wrong terminals.
  • Failure of the restraint control module itself, which is the diagnosis of last resort, not of first assumption.

A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.

Turning it off

Repair the fault, then clear the code with a scan tool that can talk to the restraint module. No component gets replaced before the module's stored code and a check of the suspect circuit agree on it — under-seat connectors and low system voltage imitate component failure exactly. Disconnecting the battery does not clear SRS codes on most vehicles, and if the fault is voltage-related it only hides the problem for a few key cycles. Some codes are latched — stored crash data, or a deployment loop that has actually fired — and require module replacement or dealer-level reprogramming rather than a simple clear. Never install a resistor or "SRS emulator" to put the light out; that leaves the system disabled and the next owner unaware. Rough US independent-shop costs: restraint system diagnosis $75-$200. Clock spring $250-$700 installed. Connector or harness repair under a seat $100-$350. Occupant classification components plus the calibration that has to follow $300-$1,200. Restraint control module with programming $400-$1,500 and up. If you work on it yourself: disconnect the battery and wait for the module's backup capacitor to discharge before touching anything — the required wait time is vehicle-specific and is in the service information, not on the internet. Keep your body out of the deployment path of any device that is still connected. Carry a live airbag facing away from you, never rest one face-down, and never apply power to a deployment circuit for any reason.
