What the symbol looks like

A red rectangular battery outline, drawn horizontally, with a small positive terminal on one end and a negative terminal on the other, and plus and minus symbols inside. Some vehicles show it with a small lightning bolt or the letters ALT or GEN instead.

What to do now

Shut off every load you do not need — A/C, heated seats, rear defroster, radio, phone chargers, and headlights if it is daylight and legal — and head for the nearest safe stop or a shop close by rather than home. Watch the temperature gauge and the steering feel on the way; if either goes wrong, pull over immediately, because that points to a broken belt. Avoid restarting the engine once you stop, since starting draws far more current than running does and you may only get one. If you are not close to help, park somewhere safe and call for a tow instead of gambling on distance.

Can I drive
Only far enough to reach a safe place, and only if the temperature gauge and steering stay normal. Every minute of driving spends battery you cannot replace, and the failure ends with the engine stopping wherever it happens to be — potentially in traffic, with power steering assist and power brake boost fading as it does. A jump start does not fix this: it starts the engine but does not restore charging, so the car dies again. Treat this as a short, deliberate trip to a stopping point, not as normal driving.
What it means

The charging system is not keeping up, so the car is running on stored battery power. When the battery drains, the engine stops — and it will not restart.

This is a charging system light, not a battery condition light. It comes on when the module or regulator sees system voltage or the alternator's output signal outside the expected window. From that point the battery is supplying the ignition, fuel pump, and every electrical accessory with no replenishment. How long that lasts depends on the battery's state of health and how much the car is drawing — nobody can tell you a number of miles, and any source that does is inventing it. There is a second risk worth knowing. On many engines one serpentine belt drives the alternator, the water pump, and the power steering pump. If a broken belt is what killed the charging, you may also be losing coolant circulation and steering assist within minutes. Belt routing varies by engine, so check whether the temperature gauge is climbing and whether the steering has gone heavy — those two symptoms alongside a battery light change the situation from inconvenient to urgent.

If it is flashing rather than steady

This lamp usually does not flash outright. What it commonly does is flicker or glow dimly at idle and go out as engine speed rises, or come on only under heavy electrical load such as headlights plus rear defrost plus blower on high. That pattern points to marginal output — a slipping belt, a partially failed alternator, or a poor connection — and it typically becomes a steady light later. Get it tested while it is still intermittent, since intermittent charging faults are much easier to catch on a running vehicle than after it strands you.

Common reasons it comes on
  • Worn, glazed, loose, or broken serpentine belt, or a failed tensioner or idler pulley
  • Alternator failure — worn brushes, failed diodes, a bad voltage regulator, or an open stator winding
  • Loose, corroded, or swollen battery terminals, or a corroded engine-to-body ground strap
  • Battery that has failed internally or shorted a cell, dragging system voltage down while the alternator works fine
  • Blown fusible link, main charging fuse, or a burned charging cable connection
  • Broken or chafed wiring in the alternator sense, field, or lamp circuit
  • Fault in a computer-controlled charging system, where the module deliberately varies alternator output and a sensor or communication fault makes it stop commanding charge
  • Failed battery current or temperature sensor on vehicles that use one to manage charging

A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.

Turning it off

The light goes out on its own once charging voltage is back in range. Testing is straightforward and cheap: measure voltage at the battery posts with the engine off and again with it running, load test the battery, and check voltage drop across the main charging cable and ground path — a bad connection mimics a bad alternator and gets alternators replaced for no reason. A conventional system typically charges somewhere in the mid-13 to mid-14 volt range, but computer-controlled charging intentionally runs lower at times to save fuel, so the reading has to be compared against the manufacturer's specification and live data, not a rule of thumb. Most shops and parts stores test charging free. Typical repairs run $100 to $300 for a belt and tensioner, $180 to $400 installed for a battery, and $400 to $1,100 for an alternator, more where it sits behind the engine or under the intake. Some vehicles require a battery registration or reset procedure after replacement so the charging strategy matches the new battery; whether yours does is make-specific.
