What the symbol looks like

A red exclamation point inside a circle, with a curved bracket on each side of the circle representing brake pads. Many North American vehicles instead show the word BRAKE in red letters, and some show a circle with a P inside when the parking brake is the trigger.

What to do now

Confirm the parking brake is fully released, including electric parking brakes — release it, apply it, release it again. If the light stays on, test the pedal gently while still moving slowly in a safe spot: press it firmly and hold. A pedal that feels normal and stays firm means you almost certainly have low fluid or a switch fault and can drive slowly and directly to a shop. A pedal that goes long, feels spongy, or slowly sinks under steady pressure means you are losing hydraulics — stop now. Slow down using engine braking and downshifting, pump the pedal to build what pressure remains, apply the parking brake progressively rather than yanking it, and get to the shoulder. Then check the fluid reservoir and look for wet spots or drips behind each wheel and under the master cylinder.

Can I drive
Only if you have released the parking brake, the pedal is firm and holds, and you are going straight to a shop at low speed on light-traffic roads. Any softness, sinking, extra pedal travel, pulling under braking, or visible fluid leak means do not drive it — brake hydraulic failures do not degrade gracefully and can go from working to nearly gone in one hard stop. Topping the reservoir off to make the light go away is not a fix and is dangerous if a leak is the reason it dropped, because you have just hidden the only warning you had. If the red brake light and the ABS light are on together, treat it as urgent regardless of pedal feel.
What it means

Three different things turn this on: the parking brake is applied, the brake fluid is low, or one hydraulic brake circuit has lost pressure. Rule out the first one, and the other two are serious.

The red brake lamp is wired to a small set of switches. One senses parking brake engagement. One floats in the master cylinder reservoir and closes when fluid drops below a minimum. On many systems a pressure differential switch in the master cylinder or a proportioning block trips when pressure between the two hydraulic circuits stops matching — that is the circuit that warns you a line, hose, caliper, or wheel cylinder has failed. Every modern car has a split hydraulic system precisely so that losing one circuit does not lose all braking, but half a system means a longer pedal, a much longer stopping distance, and often a pull to one side. On many vehicles this lamp also comes on together with the ABS light when electronic brake force distribution shuts down — that combination is worse than either alone, because the rear brakes can then lock before the fronts do. Low fluid also has a benign explanation: as brake pads wear, caliper pistons extend and fluid moves out of the reservoir into the calipers. The level falls without anything leaking. That is normal wear, but it still needs to be confirmed as wear rather than a leak.

If it is flashing rather than steady

Flashing behavior is manufacturer-specific and does not carry one universal meaning. Some vehicles flash this lamp with a chime for a specific fault such as an electric parking brake error or a brake fluid warning, some flash briefly as part of the startup bulb check, and some never flash at all. Treat a flashing red brake lamp exactly like a steady one — release the parking brake, test the pedal, and stop if anything about it feels wrong.

Common reasons it comes on
  • Parking brake partially applied, or a misadjusted, sticking, or corroded parking brake switch
  • Brake fluid low from normal pad wear as caliper pistons extend
  • Fluid leaking at a rubber hose, steel line, caliper piston seal, wheel cylinder, or the master cylinder
  • Master cylinder failing internally and bypassing, which gives a pedal that sinks slowly with no external leak
  • Pressure differential switch tripped by an actual imbalance between the two hydraulic circuits
  • Faulty or contaminated fluid level sensor in the reservoir cap or reservoir
  • Electric parking brake actuator, module, or calibration fault on vehicles with EPB
  • Failure in the electronic brake force distribution or brake booster system, which usually lights this lamp alongside the ABS lamp
  • Air in the system after a brake service that was not fully bled

A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.

Turning it off

Fix the cause and the switch opens on its own. There is no reset that makes an unfixed brake fault safe. Diagnosis is physical: check fluid level and condition, inspect every line, hose, caliper, and wheel cylinder for wetness, measure remaining pad and shoe thickness, and check pedal travel and whether it holds under sustained pressure. Brake and stability system faults on modern vehicles mostly live in chassis C-codes and network U-codes that are largely manufacturer-specific, so a basic engine code reader will show nothing — the vehicle needs a scan tool that talks to the ABS and brake control modules. Typical independent-shop ranges: brake hose $150 to $400, steel line repair $200 to $600, caliper $250 to $600 per corner, master cylinder $350 to $800, pads and rotors $300 to $700 per axle, electric parking brake actuator $400 to $900 per side. Systems with ABS often require a scan-tool-assisted bleed after the hydraulics are opened, and that procedure varies by vehicle.
