Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light

A thermometer with a rounded bulb at the bottom, sitting in two or three wavy lines that represent liquid. Red means the engine is too hot. The identical symbol in blue on many vehicles means the engine is still below operating temperature — that one is information, not a warning, and it goes out as the engine warms.
Get off the road and shut the engine down. If you are boxed in and have to move, switch the A/C off, set the heater to maximum heat with the fan on high — that dumps engine heat into the cabin and buys you a little time — and take the first safe opportunity to stop. Then leave the hood closed and let it sit. Thirty minutes is a minimum, not a green light; after a hard overheat the system commonly stays above the coolant's boiling point and under pressure for an hour or more. Do not open the radiator cap or the coolant reservoir cap on a hot system: the coolant inside is pressurized well above its boiling point and will flash to steam and spray when you release it, and those burns are severe. The test is not the clock, it is the car — the system is only safe to open when the upper radiator hose is cool enough to hold in your hand and squeezes easily with no trapped pressure in it. Until it does, do not open anything. Once it does, check the coolant level in the reservoir and look under the car for puddles or trails. Topping up with the correct coolant may get you moving, but a system that lost coolant lost it somewhere.

- No, not while it is hot. After it cools completely and you refill it, a short careful drive to a nearby shop is sometimes possible — with the heater on full, the A/C off, and your eyes on the gauge, stopping immediately if it climbs again. That is a judgment call, not a green light. If it overheated quickly, if you see white smoke from the exhaust, if the coolant is oily or the oil looks milky, or if it will not hold coolant at all, tow it. Repeat overheats compound the damage.
The engine is running hotter than it can safely tolerate. Aluminum cylinder heads warp and head gaskets fail from heat, and both happen faster than most drivers expect.
The engine coolant temperature sensor feeds the engine control module, which lights the lamp when the reading passes a calibrated limit. The number behind that limit varies by manufacturer, but the failure mode does not. A modern engine holds tight tolerances between an aluminum head and an iron or aluminum block. Push coolant past its boiling point and it stops carrying heat away — steam is a poor conductor — so temperature runs away instead of climbing steadily. Heads warp, head gaskets let go, and in a severe overheat pistons can scuff the bores. A single hard overheat is enough to do it. Note what the gauge and light do not tell you: if the coolant level has dropped far enough that the sensor is sitting in air instead of liquid, the gauge can read normal or even fall while the engine cooks. Steam from under the hood, a sweet smell, or a heater that suddenly blows cold are all signs to trust over the gauge.
Flashing behavior varies by manufacturer. Some vehicles flash the temperature lamp, add a chime, or display a text message as a first stage before a steady red warning, and some use a flashing or separate symbol for low coolant level rather than high temperature. Treat any flashing hot-side warning exactly like a steady one — stop and check. If your vehicle has a distinct low coolant level lamp, that one means the level sensor sees air, which is the early stage of the same problem.

- Radiator plugged internally with corrosion or blocked externally with bugs, leaves, or bent fins
- Air pocket trapped in the system after a coolant service that was not properly bled
- Failed pressure cap, which lowers the system's boiling point and lets coolant escape as steam
- Head gasket failure pushing combustion gas into the cooling system, which pressurizes it and pushes coolant out
- Restricted airflow from a damaged shroud, a missing undertray, or front-end collision damage
A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.
There is no code to reset. The lamp is driven by measured temperature and goes out when the engine cools below the threshold, which is why it can seem to fix itself — it has not. Diagnosis starts with a pressure test of the cooling system to find where it loses coolant, a check that the fans command on, and verification that the thermostat opens. If the system pressurizes with no external leak, a block test that checks the coolant for combustion gases tells you whether the head gasket is involved. Do not authorize a part until one of those tests names it: a thermostat, a fan assembly and a head gasket all present as an overheat, and only the test tells them apart. Typical independent-shop ranges: thermostat $200 to $500, radiator $450 to $1,100, water pump $450 to $1,300 depending heavily on whether it is timing-belt driven, cooling fan assembly $400 to $900, head gasket $1,500 to $3,500 and up. Refill and bleed procedures are vehicle-specific — many modern systems need a vacuum fill or a defined bleed sequence, and a sloppy refill leaves an air pocket that overheats the engine all over again.
