Glow Plug / Preheat Indicator (Diesel)

Also called: preheat light, wait-to-start light, coil light, the "squiggly line" or "curly wire" light, diesel glow light. Diesel engines only — a gasoline vehicle does not have one.

What the symbol looks like

A horizontal coiled filament: a loosely wound spiral with a straight tail at each end, often described as a pig's tail or a spring lying on its side. Some vehicles pair it with the words WAIT TO START. It is not the engine-outline check engine light and not the battery symbol, both of which are frequently confused with it.

What to do now

Get the codes read, including manufacturer-specific engine codes, because some preheat and control module faults do not appear on a basic generic reader. While you are at it, note the pattern: hard cold starts with white smoke and a rough first minute points at the glow system, while a flashing lamp with reduced power points at engine management on the makes that use it that way and should be treated like a check engine light. Have the battery, terminals and charging system tested — the glow circuit draws high current, and a tired battery both causes preheat faults and masks them. If cold weather is coming and you have a known glow fault, plan around it: a block heater, indoor parking, or getting it fixed before the first hard freeze rather than during it.

Can I drive
Usually yes for normal driving. The realistic risk is that the engine will not start on a cold morning, not that something will fail while you are moving; once running and warm, an engine with a dead plug or two generally drives normally. Two exceptions matter. First, if the lamp is flashing on a vehicle that uses it as an engine-management warning, or you have lost power or entered a derate, treat it as a serious engine fault and get it diagnosed before any long trip. Second, running cold on a partly dead glow system means more unburnt fuel, more smoke, fuel washing the cylinder walls and extra soot loading the diesel particulate filter — tolerable once, genuinely hard on the engine and the exhaust aftertreatment across a whole winter. Fix it before the cold season rather than through it.
What it means

At key-on this is not a warning at all. It means the glow plugs are heating the combustion chambers so a cold diesel will light off; you wait for it to go out, then crank. It becomes a fault indication when it stays on after the engine is running, comes on while you are driving, or flashes — and on a number of makes a flashing preheat lamp is the general engine-management warning rather than anything to do with glow plugs.

A diesel ignites fuel with the heat of compression alone. When the engine is cold, the cylinder walls and head soak up so much of that heat that ignition becomes unreliable, so the engine preheats: either a glow plug — an electric heating element — screwed into each cylinder, or on some engines a single grid heater in the intake. Preheat time is temperature-dependent, from about a second when the engine is warm to considerably longer in deep cold. Most modern systems also run an afterglow phase, keeping the plugs energised for a period after starting to steady the idle, cut white smoke and reduce hydrocarbon emissions. A glow plug is therefore doing useful work well past the moment you release the key. Glow plugs usually fail open circuit, and the control module notices the missing current draw and lights the lamp. One or two dead plugs often produce no symptoms at all in mild weather, then become a hard-start, rough-first-minute, white-smoke problem as soon as the temperature drops. That timing is why so many of these get diagnosed in the first cold week of the year. The misdiagnosis to avoid: on several manufacturers, European diesels especially, a flashing preheat lamp is the engine-management warning light — the diesel equivalent of a flashing check engine light, often with a power derate — and has nothing necessarily to do with the preheat system. Codes come before parts here more than almost anywhere else. Finally, the lamp identifies a system, not a cylinder. And a cold-start complaint has other equally good explanations: low compression, a fuel supply or fuel heater problem, injector return leakage, or a coolant temperature sensor reading warm so the module never commands a proper preheat. Those all look identical from the driver's seat.

If it is flashing rather than steady

This is the important one, and it varies by manufacturer. On many diesels a flashing preheat lamp is a general engine-management warning, frequently with reduced power, and is not necessarily about glow plugs at all — the lamp is simply reused as a fault indicator. On other vehicles a flashing lamp means specifically that the preheat system failed a self-test, and a few older systems blink out a countable fault code. Because the meaning is make-specific, a flashing lamp is a reason to scan the vehicle, not a reason to order glow plugs. If it flashes and the vehicle also feels down on power, give it the same weight you would a flashing check engine light.

Common reasons it comes on
  • One or more failed glow plugs, almost always open circuit. They are wear items and tend to go one at a time rather than all together.
  • Glow plug control module or relay failure. On modern diesels a solid-state module drives each plug individually and monitors current; it fails at least as often as the plugs it controls.
  • Corroded, loose or broken connectors, bus bars, and the small nuts on top of the plugs. Very common on older engines and often free to fix once found.
  • Wiring and fuse faults in the high-current glow circuit. This feed carries serious amperage, and connection resistance shows up as a system fault rather than an obvious break.
  • A weak battery, poor grounds or corroded terminals. Low voltage during cranking sets preheat faults that look exactly like component failure.
  • A coolant temperature sensor reading warm on a cold engine, so the module never commands a full preheat cycle. The starting complaint is indistinguishable from bad plugs.
  • A plug that swelled or seized in the head during earlier work and was left disconnected rather than replaced.
  • On engines using an intake grid heater instead of individual plugs, a failed grid element, its relay, or the heavy cable feeding it.

A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.

Turning it off

Repair the fault, then clear the code with a scan tool that can read the engine module's manufacturer-specific codes. Sound testing checks each plug individually rather than condemning the set. There are two ways to do that: clamp each plug's own feed wire during a preheat cycle and compare the corners, or — with the ignition off, the key out, and each plug's feed disconnected — measure each plug's resistance and compare against the engine-specific spec. An open plug draws no current and reads open. A current clamp on the common supply is worth doing as a quick check that the circuit is energising at all, but it gives you total draw only: it will not tell you which plug is open, and on a module that drives each plug separately it can miss a single dead circuit entirely. Add module command versus actual state, battery voltage under load, and the coolant temperature sensor reading compared with the true engine temperature. No plug or module gets replaced until one of those tests names it. Resistance values, current draw, plug type, removal procedure and torque are all engine-specific — never carry numbers over from another engine, and never guess a torque figure on a plug threaded into an aluminum head. One thing worth knowing before you take an estimate personally: glow plugs seize in the head and snap off, and that changes the job entirely. A clean set on an accessible engine might be $200-$700 installed. An engine where the intake manifold, turbo or injectors come off first, or where a plug breaks and has to be extracted, runs $800-$2,500 and up, and a broken plug that drops its tip into a cylinder becomes a head-off repair. A control module is typically $250-$800 installed. Diagnosis $100-$200. Where one plug has already failed, many shops will quote the full set rather than a single plug, because the labour is largely shared and the remaining plugs are the same age — but that call belongs to whoever has the engine open and can see the condition of the threads, not to a rule.
