What the symbol looks like

A red old-fashioned oil can — a squat body with a long tapered spout — with a single drip falling from the tip. Some vehicles add a wavy line beneath the can; on many makes that wavy-line version is a low oil level indicator rather than a pressure warning, and it is usually amber.

What to do now

Pull over as soon as you can do it safely and shut the engine off — do not drive to the next exit, do not finish the trip. Once the engine has sat a few minutes, check the dipstick on level ground. If the oil is below the low mark, add the correct grade until it reads in range and restart briefly while watching the light. If the light goes out and stays out at idle, you have a leak or consumption problem to find, not a solved problem. If the light stays on or comes back at idle with the level correct, shut it off and call a tow. If the oil looks like a milkshake, smells strongly of gasoline, or the engine was making a rhythmic knock or tapping before you stopped, do not restart it at all.

Can I drive
No — not with the light on and the oil level confirmed correct. Assume the engine is being damaged every second it runs. The only driving worth doing is the few feet it takes to get out of traffic. Tow it, even if the tow costs more than you would like; it costs far less than a rebuilt engine. If adding oil made the light go out completely, short careful driving to a shop is defensible, but keep the trip short and stop immediately if the light returns.
What it means

Oil is not reaching the engine's bearings at the pressure it needs. This is the one light where the difference between stopping now and driving another mile can be the difference between a cheap repair and a new engine.

A pressure switch or sensor in the oil gallery watches system pressure. When pressure drops below the switch's threshold, the light comes on. That threshold is set by the manufacturer and varies by engine, so no single number applies. What does not vary is the physics: crankshaft and connecting rod bearings ride on a pressurized film of oil, not on metal. Lose the film and the bearing surfaces contact each other, wear accelerates in seconds, and the damage is permanent. This lamp is not the oil change reminder or maintenance minder, which is usually amber, often spelled out in text, and only tracks mileage or oil condition. It is also not the same as a low oil level warning — you can be a quart low with normal pressure, and you can have a full sump with no pressure at all if the pump or pickup has failed.

If it is flashing rather than steady

This lamp normally does not flash. What it does instead is meaningful: a light that glows or flickers at hot idle and goes out when engine speed rises indicates pressure that is marginal, not absent — typically worn bearings, thinned oil, a tired pump, or a failing sensor. Treat it as a warning you are on borrowed time, get it verified with a mechanical gauge, and do not wait for it to become steady.

Common reasons it comes on
  • Low oil level from an external leak, an unnoticed burn-off between changes, or an oil change error
  • Failed oil pressure switch or sensor, or a corroded or shorted connector at it — the light lies, the pressure is fine
  • Oil filter restricted or collapsed, or the wrong filter without a working anti-drainback or bypass valve
  • Wrong oil viscosity for the engine, or oil badly thinned by fuel dilution or overdue for changing
  • Oil pickup screen clogged with sludge from missed maintenance
  • Failing oil pump, worn pump gears, or a stuck pressure relief valve
  • Worn main and rod bearings, which increase clearance and bleed pressure off — usually shows at hot idle first
  • Coolant entering the oil through a head gasket or cracked casting
  • Timing chain or balance shaft assembly failure taking the pump drive with it

A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.

Turning it off

There is nothing to reset. The light is driven directly by pressure and goes out when real pressure returns above the switch threshold. The first diagnostic step is always the same on every engine: install a mechanical oil pressure gauge at the sender port and compare the actual reading against the manufacturer's specification for that engine at idle and at a specified RPM. Those specification values are engine-specific — anyone quoting you a universal number is making it up. That test decides everything. Good pressure on the gauge points at the sensor or its wiring, typically $100 to $400 depending on how buried the sender is. Low pressure on the gauge means the engine's oiling system, which ranges from a filter and oil change through a pump or pickup job in the $600 to $2,000 range, up to bearings or a replacement engine at $3,000 to $8,000 or more. A tow is usually $75 to $250.
