Traction Control / Stability Control Light
Also called: TCS, TC, ESC, ESP, VSC, VDC, DSC, StabiliTrak, AdvanceTrac, the skidding car light, the "car with squiggly lines". The separate TC OFF / ESC OFF / VSC OFF lamp means the system was switched off, not that it failed.

A small car seen from behind or above with two wavy S-shaped skid lines under or trailing it. Some vehicles use letters instead — TCS, ESP, VSC, DSC. The same symbol with the word OFF beside it, or inside a crossed-out circle, is the disabled indicator rather than a fault.
First question: flashing or steady? Flashing on a wet or snowy road is the system working and needs no action. Second question, if it is steady: is a separate TC OFF / ESC OFF / VSC OFF telltale or OFF text also showing? If one is, someone may have switched the system off or a drive mode disabled it — press the button and cycle the ignition. If only the plain lamp is steady, treat it as a stored fault. Cycling the ignition is still worth doing, since a momentary wheel speed dropout often clears on the next start, but a lamp that comes back needs scanning rather than another key cycle. Then slow down for rain, snow, gravel and hard cornering, because the correction that has been quietly saving you is no longer there. If the amber ABS lamp is on with it, or the pedal feels different, get it diagnosed before the next long drive. If the RED brake warning lamp is lit as well, do not finish the trip: stop as soon as it is safe. That combination usually means electronic brake force distribution has been lost — the rear brakes can lock before the fronts under hard braking, which can put the car around — or that brake fluid is low or a hydraulic circuit has failed. Check the fluid level once you are stopped, and have it towed, or moved only a very short distance at low speed straight to a shop. Note the pattern before you go to the shop: only above a certain speed, only when turning one direction, only on rough roads — that detail narrows a wheel speed sensor hunt considerably.

- With the plain amber lamp alone, in dry conditions at reasonable speeds, yes — with the understanding that the car will no longer catch a slide for you. The exposure is exactly the situations the system exists for: rain, snow, ice, gravel, a sharp corner taken too fast, hard acceleration out of a wet junction. If the amber ABS light is on as well, add wet-weather and gravel braking, because the wheels can lock now. If the RED brake warning lamp is on with it, that is not a drive-with-caution situation at all: stop, check the brake fluid level, and arrange a tow rather than driving on — you may have lost brake force distribution or a hydraulic circuit. If your vehicle uses this data for all-wheel drive or driver assistance, expect those to be degraded too. The amber-only case is safe enough to get on with your week and not safe enough to leave alone through a winter.
Steady illumination of the plain skidding-car lamp normally means the system has detected a fault and shut itself down — you are driving without that safety net. Manual switch-off lights the separate TC OFF / ESC OFF / VSC OFF telltale on most vehicles, so check whether an OFF lamp or OFF text is showing too; a few makes light both, but the plain lamp on its own should be treated as a stored fault, not as somebody's button press. Flashing means the opposite of a fault: the system is working right this second, cutting power or braking a slipping wheel. Your ordinary brakes still work — unless the red brake warning lamp is on as well, which is a different and far more urgent problem.
Stability control watches four wheel speed sensors, a steering angle sensor, and a yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensor. It compares where you are pointing the car with where the car is actually going. When those disagree it brakes an individual wheel and asks the engine for less torque until the car follows the steering again. Traction control is the simpler half of the same hardware: it stops a driven wheel spinning up. All of it runs on the ABS module and shares the ABS wheel speed sensors, so this light and the ABS light frequently come on together — usually pointing at one shared input rather than two separate failures. A traction fault by itself does not affect the hydraulic brakes; you keep a full pedal and full stopping power. If the amber ABS lamp is on too, you have also lost anti-lock, and wheels can now lock under hard or wet braking. If the RED brake warning lamp is on, that is a different class of problem again — usually lost electronic brake force distribution, low fluid, or a failed hydraulic circuit — and it is covered below. One nuance saves a lot of wasted money: stability control needs the engine to reduce torque on command. Many vehicles switch the system off deliberately when the engine has a fault that makes that unreliable — a misfire, a throttle body or accelerator pedal fault. In that case the traction light next to a check engine light is a symptom, and the engine code is the disease. Fix the engine fault and the traction light often goes with it. Other systems ride on this data. Hill-start assist, trailer sway control, some all-wheel-drive functions, adaptive cruise and lane keeping can all drop out with a single wheel speed sensor. Losing several features at once usually means one sensor, not several modules.
Flashing means the system is intervening right now — it senses wheel slip and is cutting power or braking a wheel. That is the system working, not failing, and it is normal on wet paint, snow, gravel, or hard acceleration in the rain. Take it as feedback: you have less grip than you thought. What is not normal is a lamp that flashes continuously on dry pavement at a steady speed. That points to a wheel speed signal the module distrusts, or a mismatched tire, and it should be scanned.
- A wheel speed sensor or its toothed tone ring — by a wide margin the most common cause. Sensors fail, wiring chafes near the strut or in the wheel-well loom, and the ring cracks or packs with rust and debris. The code names the corner; the corner does not name the part.
- A wheel bearing or hub assembly with the sensor built in. A worn bearing lets the air gap change and the signal drop out, usually with a hum that rises with speed.
- Steering angle sensor out of calibration. Very common after an alignment, rack, clock spring or suspension work — the module believes you are going straight while the car is turning.
- The driver switched the system off, or the vehicle disabled it automatically in a drive mode, 4-Low, or a track setting — on most vehicles this lights the separate OFF telltale rather than the plain lamp, so check which one you are looking at.
- An engine fault that removes torque reduction — a misfire, throttle or pedal position fault. Stability control turns itself off because it cannot do its half of the job.
- Mismatched tires, a compact spare, badly uneven tread depth, or a non-standard tire size, giving wheel speeds that never agree.
- Low battery voltage or a failing alternator. ABS and stability modules are voltage-sensitive and set faults when supply sags, often only at startup or in cold weather.
- Brake light switch or brake pedal position sensor faults, which the module relies on to know when you are braking.
- Yaw rate or lateral acceleration sensor faults, or a module that has dropped off the vehicle network.
- Corroded connectors and water damage at the ABS module or in wheel-well harnesses — routine in salt regions and often repairable without new parts.
- Low brake fluid or a hydraulic fault, which on many vehicles brings up the red brake lamp alongside this one and is the case to take seriously.
A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.
Repair the fault first, then clear the code with a scan tool that can access the ABS/ESC module — a basic generic OBD-II reader usually cannot reach it. Plenty of faults are self-clearing: once the signal is valid again the light goes out after a key cycle and a short drive above walking speed. Steering angle sensor faults normally need a calibration procedure rather than a code clear, and that procedure is make-specific. Rough US independent-shop costs: diagnosis $75-$200. Wheel speed sensor $150-$450 per corner depending on how buried it is. Hub and bearing assembly with integrated sensor $350-$900 per corner. Steering angle calibration $80-$200. Brake light switch $100-$250. ABS module or hydraulic control unit $600-$2,000 and up, often with programming. Get the codes read before anyone buys parts, and confirm the named circuit with live wheel speed data on a rolling vehicle before anyone buys a sensor. The code names a circuit, not a failed component — a left front wheel speed code is satisfied equally by a bad sensor, a rusted tone ring, a chafed wire, and a loose connector, and only one of those costs real money.
The light tells you a system reported a fault. The stored code tells you what it measured. Look up your code — or if you have several, analyse them together.
