What the symbol looks like

A gear or cog outline with a thermometer inside it, or a gear sitting above wavy fluid lines. Many trucks and older vehicles spell it out as AT OIL TEMP or TRANS TEMP. Some vehicles stage it — amber as temperature climbs, red once it reaches the critical threshold.

What to do now

Pull over somewhere safe and idle in park or neutral rather than shutting the engine off, because the transmission's cooling flow stops when the engine stops. Turn the A/C off to unload the radiator that is usually cooling the transmission as well, and watch the engine temperature gauge at the same time. Give it several minutes. If the light goes out and you were towing, climbing a grade, or crawling in traffic in the heat, the cause was load: drop the trailer if you can, select tow/haul mode or a lower gear so the transmission stops hunting, keep speeds moderate and steady, and get it inspected. If the light stays on, if the engine is overheating too, if you can smell hot or burnt fluid, or if shifting has gone soft, slipping or harsh, stop driving and arrange a tow. Check the fluid level and condition once things cool — bearing in mind that the checking procedure and required fluid temperature are vehicle-specific and many modern units have no dipstick at all.

Can I drive
Not while the light is on. Every mile at that temperature spends clutch and fluid life you cannot get back, and the end of that road is a rebuild rather than a repair. If it cools at idle and stays off once you have taken the load away — trailer dropped, grade behind you, A/C off, tow/haul engaged — you can continue at a moderate steady speed to a shop while watching the gauge. If it comes back on, or the transmission slips, shudders, bangs into gear or refuses a gear, or the fluid smells burnt or looks pink and milky, stop and call for a tow. A tow costs a few hundred dollars. A transmission does not.
What it means

The automatic transmission fluid is hotter than the manufacturer allows. Heat is what kills automatic transmissions: hot fluid loses its film strength, varnishes the valve body, cooks the friction material off the clutch plates and hardens the seals. Damage accumulates for as long as the light is on. This is one of the few non-red warnings that genuinely means stop and deal with it now.

A conventional automatic typically runs somewhere around 175-200°F in normal use, and fluid life falls away sharply above that. The specific warning threshold, the fluid type and the safe operating range are set by the manufacturer and vary a great deal — a CVT, a dual-clutch unit and a heavy-duty truck automatic do not share one number, so treat any figure you read online as a rule of thumb and your own light as the authority. The heat comes from slip. A torque converter that is not locked up is a fluid coupling turning the difference between engine and transmission speed into heat, and every shift slips clutch plates briefly on purpose. Towing, long grades, deep sand or snow, stop-and-go traffic in high ambient temperature, and a transmission hunting between gears all keep the converter unlocked and the heat pouring in. One fact drives the roadside procedure: on most conventional automatics the fluid pump is driven by the engine, so shutting the engine off stops the cooling flow entirely. Idling in park or neutral keeps fluid circulating through the cooler and drops the temperature faster than switching off — as long as the engine itself is not overheating. On many vehicles the transmission cooler lives inside the radiator's side tank, which ties the two systems together. Engine cooling trouble becomes transmission cooling trouble. It also means an internal cooler failure lets coolant and fluid mix, giving the pink milkshake on the dipstick that ends transmissions quickly. Both low and overfilled fluid overheat a transmission. Low, and the pump draws air; overfull, and the rotating parts whip it into foam. Aerated fluid neither carries heat nor holds hydraulic pressure. Finally, the light reads a temperature sensor, usually in the pan or valve body, and a faulty sensor can raise the warning at normal temperature — but that is a conclusion for a shop with a scan tool and an infrared thermometer, never an assumption made at the roadside.

If it is flashing rather than steady

Most vehicles use a steady lamp. Where flashing is used it is generally a staged warning — flashing or amber as the temperature passes the first threshold, solid or red at the critical one — and a few manufacturers flash it to indicate the transmission has dropped into a protective mode with reduced gears or limited line pressure. The behaviour is make-specific. Either way the response is identical: stop and cool it down. Do not wait for a flashing lamp to become steady before acting.

Common reasons it comes on
  • Load and duty cycle: towing at or near the rating, long grades, deep snow or sand, heavy stop-and-go in high ambient heat, or hard driving. On vehicles without an auxiliary cooler this is frequently the entire answer.
  • Low fluid from a leak — pan gasket, cooler line, output or axle seal, or the cooler itself — or an overfill from a previous service. Both foam the fluid and wreck its ability to carry heat.
  • Old, oxidised, or wrong-specification fluid. Automatic transmission fluid is not generic; the wrong friction modifier changes how clutches engage and how much heat they make.
  • A restricted cooling path: debris packed between the A/C condenser and the radiator, a plugged cooler core, kinked or collapsing cooler lines, or a cooler bypass valve or thermostat stuck closed.
  • Engine cooling problems, because the transmission cooler is often inside the radiator. A stuck thermostat, a failing fan clutch, a weak electric fan, or low coolant heats the transmission along with the engine.
  • Internal radiator cooler failure mixing coolant into the fluid — pink, milky fluid on the dipstick. This one is urgent; contaminated clutch material does not recover.
  • A torque converter lockup clutch that is not applying, leaving the converter slipping continuously at cruise. Usually accompanied by a lockup or shift solenoid code and sometimes a shudder at light throttle.
  • Internal wear: slipping clutch packs, a clogged filter, a worn pump. Here the heat is a symptom of a transmission already failing rather than the cause.
  • A faulty transmission fluid temperature sensor or its wiring giving a false reading — confirmed by comparing scan-tool temperature against an infrared reading of the pan, not assumed because the rest of the car feels fine.
  • Oversized tires, changed gearing, or a tune that keeps the converter unlocked or the transmission hunting between gears on grades.

A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.

Turning it off

The lamp itself goes out when the fluid cools, which is not a repair, and any stored code needs a scan tool to clear. Proper diagnosis starts with fluid level and condition, moves to the cooling path — airflow through the radiator stack, cooler line flow, cooler restriction, engine cooling system health — and then to scan data comparing commanded and actual temperature and watching torque converter lockup behaviour on a road test. Only after that does anyone talk about internal repairs. Rough US independent-shop costs: diagnosis $100-$250. Fluid and filter service $150-$450 on common vehicles, $250-$700 where the pan is a cassette or the fill procedure requires a scan tool and a specific fluid temperature. Cooler line or cooler work $200-$700. Adding a properly sized auxiliary cooler $250-$600, which is inexpensive insurance if you tow regularly. Radiator replacement $400-$1,200. A temperature sensor is often part of the internal harness or valve body assembly rather than a standalone part, so $250-$900. Torque converter $900-$2,000. A rebuild or remanufactured unit $2,500-$6,000 and up. If coolant and transmission fluid have mixed, stop running the vehicle. The repair cost climbs sharply once contaminated fluid has circulated through the clutch packs.
