What the symbol looks like

An amber outline of an engine block viewed from the side — a blocky shape with a small notch on top and cooling fins or bolts along the base. Some vehicles use the word CHECK inside the engine outline, and older or truck applications may use the text SERVICE ENGINE SOON instead of a symbol.

What to do now

Check whether the light is steady or flashing before anything else. Steady, with the car driving, idling, and sounding normal: finish your trip, then get the codes read within a few days. Steady with a real symptom — rough running, loss of power, odd noise, smell, or a temperature or oil pressure light alongside it — treat the other symptom as the emergency and stop. Flashing: reduce speed and load and get off the road. One free check first: make sure the fuel cap is tight to several clicks, since a loose cap sets an evaporative emissions code, and the light may take a few drive cycles to go out on its own after you tighten it.

Can I drive
Usually yes, in the short term, if the light is steady and the car drives normally — but only until you get it scanned. Codes that seem harmless can be masking a fault that gets expensive with miles, such as a lean condition slowly cooking a catalytic converter. If the light is flashing, or if the car is misfiring, overheating, losing power, or leaking, the answer is no.
What it means

The engine computer found something outside its programmed limits and stored a trouble code. The code names what the computer measured, not which part failed.

This is the Malfunction Indicator Lamp, required on every OBD-II vehicle sold in the US since 1996. The powertrain control module runs continuous and periodic self-tests called monitors. When a monitor's result falls outside its calibration limits, the module stores a diagnostic trouble code, and on most faults waits for the fault to repeat on a second drive cycle before lighting the lamp. It also stores a freeze frame — a snapshot of engine data from the moment the code set, which is often more useful than the code itself. A code describes a symptom or a circuit. P0171 says fuel trim ran lean past the threshold; it does not say whether that was a vacuum leak, a dirty mass airflow sensor, low fuel pressure, or an exhaust leak upstream of the oxygen sensor. Everything between the code and the repair is test work. Anyone who reads a code and immediately names a part to replace is guessing.

If it is flashing rather than steady

A flashing check engine light means an active misfire severe enough that raw fuel is passing into the exhaust. That fuel burns in the catalytic converter and can melt its substrate within minutes of hard driving. Ease off the throttle, avoid high speed and heavy load, and get to a safe stop or a nearby shop. Continuing to drive a flashing MIL can turn a coil or spark plug repair into a converter replacement.

Common reasons it comes on
  • Loose, damaged, or missing fuel cap, or a cracked evaporative emissions hose
  • Oxygen or air-fuel ratio sensor circuit fault, or a sensor slowed by age or contamination
  • Misfire from worn spark plugs, a failing coil, an injector fault, or low compression
  • Vacuum leak at an intake gasket, PCV hose, or brake booster line
  • Catalytic converter efficiency below the programmed threshold, often as a downstream effect of an unfixed engine fault
  • Contaminated or failing mass airflow sensor
  • EGR valve or passage restricted with carbon, or an EGR position or flow fault
  • Thermostat stuck open so the engine never reaches its regulating temperature
  • Wiring and connector damage — chafed harness, corroded pins, rodent damage
  • Failing fuel pump or restricted fuel filter causing lean codes under load

A warning light reports that a module detected something. It does not identify which part is responsible — that takes reading the stored codes and testing.

Turning it off

Fix the cause, and the lamp clears itself. Under the OBD-II standard the module turns the MIL off after three consecutive drive cycles in which the monitor that set the code runs and passes, and erases the stored code after 40 engine warm-up cycles without the fault. A scan tool clears it instantly, but clearing without repairing only hides the problem and resets all readiness monitors to 'not ready,' which fails a state emissions test until you have driven enough for them to re-run. Do not clear codes before a shop sees them — the freeze frame goes with them. A free parts-store code read gives you a number; a real diagnostic runs $75 to $200 at most independent shops and is what you are actually paying for.
